The Cirque de Navacelles is large erosional landform, an incised meander, located towards the southern edge of the Massif Central mountain range in France. It is located near Saint-Maurice-Navacelles and Blandas between the Hérault department and the Gard department.[1]
The cirque is isolated, with only a few small villages in the surrounding area. However, with the completion of the Millau Viaduct in 2004 and the A75 motorway between Clermont-Ferrand and Pézenas, tourism in the region has increased.
This is the cirque at the end of Valle Francés in Torres del Paine National Park, Chilean Patagonia. Looking through old photos I sometimes find an unexpected opportunity to create a panorama. Stitched from two horizontal frames.

The Tamar former glacial circle valley does not see the sun from October to early March due to the over 1000m rocky wall, which, to the south, connects the Mojstrovka-Travnik chain with the Jalovec, constituting an obstacle, in addition to the sun, also to the mild Mediterranean southern currents; so, the presence of a vast glacier that shaped the valley during the last Ice Age is thus explained, exactly as for the other Julian cirques.
Here we are near the springs called "Črne vode" (Black Waters) at just under 1300m a.s.l. altitude, but the sparse and prostrate vegetation (from the weight of the snow, also the result of frequent avalanches), the mountain pines and the rock all around make one believe that we are at a higher altitude.
The Tamar Valley continues, slightly lower, a few more kilometers, bending towards the southwest (in the direction of the sun), ending up "hitting" the bastions of Mount Jalovec.
This mountain massif is geographically and climatically very important as it is located at the crossroads of three valleys and is part of the watershed between the Adriatic and the Black Sea catchments: so, in addition to the Danube catchment/basin Tamar valley, the Adriatic catchment valleys Koritnica and Trenta also reach it.
It is also the main mountain of three mountain ranges that branch off from it, namely the Mojstrovke-Travnik mountain chain, on the left of the photo, the Ponce/Ponze, along the Italian border, which continue with the Spiče on the right, and the long chain of the Pelc mountains, up to the Bavski Grintavec, towards the south.

The area is an example of a dissected plateau in which the Vis river eroded a deep channel through the base of the valley, creating an incised meander which eventually eroded through creating a cut-off at the neck of the loop. This left an oxbow lake which later dried up, leaving deposits of silt and peat. This created what is the only patch of arable land for many miles around.

The Cirque de Gavarnie is a cirque in the central Pyrenees, in Southwestern France, close to the border of Spain. It is within the commune of Gavarnie, the department of Hautes-Pyrénées, and the Pyrénées National Park. Major features of the cirque are La Brèche de Roland and the Gavarnie Falls. It was described by Victor Hugo as "the Colosseum of nature" due to its enormous size and horseshoe shape resembling an ancient amphitheatre.
The cirque is 800 m wide (on the deepest point) and about 3,000 m wide at the top. The rock walls that surround it are up to 1,500 meters above the floor of the Cirque.
During the warmer seasons of spring, summer and fall, there are a number of large meltwater falls that spill into the cirque. The largest of these is Gavarnie Falls, the second-highest waterfall in Europe. It descends some 422 meters over a series of steps before reaching the floor of the cirque.
There are also several passes and clefts between the peaks that form the rim of the Cirque. The largest is La Brèche de Roland, at 2,800 meters above sea level. According to legend, its sheer walls were cut into the mountain by the sword of the hero Roland, nephew to Charlemagne.
The cirque, and many others like it in the Pyrenees, was formed by the process of glacial erosion. The Cirque de Gavarnie's uniquely immense size was likely caused by repeated cycles of glacial scraping over millions of years.
A number of rare plants and animals live on the peaks at the upper rim of the Cirque de Gavarnie, protected on both the French and the Spanish sides by national parks. Martagon lilies grow in the pine forests. Saxifraga and other tiny alpine flowers cling to the rock faces. Chamois, a type of mammal similar to goats or antelope, live among the crags.
