The traditional "three-ring" spectacle under a massive canvas tent has become largely unsustainable today. But once upon a time the “Big Top” traveling circus (think Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey) was an incredibly popular attraction, so much so that a steady stream of young people joined the traveling shows. The trope of the wide-eyed child slipping under the tent canvas to become a star was heavily popularized by 19th-century media.

Books like the 1881 bestseller “Toby Tyler; or, Ten Weeks with a Circus” sold millions of copies. While the book was meant to be a cautionary tale about the grueling reality of circus life, it ironically cemented the runaway concept in the public imagination. The story about an orphan who runs away to join the circus was even the basis of a 1960 Disney movie.

Life under the big top was physically demanding. Children who lived in the circus worked long hours from a very young age—often as young as six or seven. It was not a glamorous getaway, but rather a life of relentless physical labor and rigorous performance schedules.

While most kids who fled to the circus faded into historical anonymity, several individuals who actually ran away—or used traveling shows to escape their lives—went on to become cultural icons:

In 1944, at just 14 years old, Steve McQueen fled his uncle's Missouri farm to join a traveling circus. He didn't do it out of a love for the arts, but rather as a desperate, transient means to hitch a ride across the country to reach his mother in Los Angeles. He worked grueling manual labor under the tents briefly before quitting, later joining the Marines and eventually striking gold in Hollywood.

Screen legend Cary Grant (Archibald Leach) used a British touring troupe of knockabout comedians, stilt-walkers, and acrobats to permanently escape a deeply troubled childhood. When the troupe traveled to America in 1920, the 16-year-old stayed behind and kept performing in vaudeville until reinventing himself in Hollywood.

Mabel Stark, one of the most celebrated and daring tiger trainers in history, abandoned an unfulfilling job as a nurse to join the traveling Al G. Barnes Circus. Despite starting as a low-level worker, she eventually fought her way into the center ring. She became the first superstar female tiger trainer, famously performing with up to 18 big cats at once in the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus.
