The Dangers of Cat Litter

To all Cat Owners, please do not flush your cat's litter down the toilet or dump them in the storm drains! Many sea otters are dying from two protozoan parasites (Toxoplasma gondii and Sarcocystis neurona) that are known to breed in cats. Basically, rodents and birds infected with these parasites are eaten by cats. The parasites develop in the cat's guts and its eggs are released in their scat. These eggs end up in the ocean if they are flushed down the toilet or carry into the storm drain by runoffs. Mussels, clams, and oysters ingest these eggs and when the sea otters eat these shellfish, the eggs kills the sea otter by infecting its brain and organs! (>_<)
