Each chick has a dot of white near the tip of their beak and it was fun watching them walking quickly across the lily pads to get to the food bought to them.

It is interesting how the tip of mum's open beak has cast its shadow on the lily pad located immediately behind her and the first chic.

I spent over an hour photographing these coots and watching mum and dad foraging for food. Every now and again dad would wander off, up or down the river attending to perimeter defense.

As adults, [all] coots have a drab color scheme, with black bodies and white bills. Their chicks, however, have an aesthetic that’s part drunk friar, part disheveled lion, and part tequila sunrise. Their faces and bald pates are bright red, while their necks are encircled in scruffy yellow-orange plumes - extract from an article by Ed Yong, "The Survival Advantage of Being a Fancy Baby Coot" printed in 'The Atlantic', date unknown

De estudiante de colegio mi profesor de castellano Flavio Peña tuvo gran influencia de mis actuales gustos. En especial por los palíndromos, bellas simetrías del lenguaje. Llegué a ganar un concurso por la frase con sentido mas larga de todo el colegio, que se leía igual de adelanta hacia atrás y viceversa. En la universidad me los encontré también pero esta vez en la infinitud de aquellos números (capicúas )como 33533. Existe toda una literatura extensa sobre la conformación general de estos números que debería retomarla. En esta ocasión la chica que intentaba tomar una foto en una fría tarde me recordó que HOY ELLA TE DETALLA Y ALLÁ TE DETALLE YO.

This little chic had left the colony and almost made it down to the water. Out of view was a couple of sea turtle patrol personnel watching over it to protect it from predators while waiting for someone from bird rescue to check it out and return it to the colony.
