For Tuesday it's back to the footbridge on top of the roundhouse at Grafton West Virginia where we have a GP40 still in B&O paint and a Chessie GP40-2 taking a spin around the turntable. April 23, 1977.
Amid wet, rain-soaked autumn foliage, an eastbound CSX freight curves through Mance, Pennsylvania, on October 22, 1988. Four of the six locomotives in the consist still wear the colors of Chessie System.

New Chessie SD50 units with older power as B&O SD50 8588 rests at Grafton, WV on December 8, 1984. At the time I would have been astonished to know that the 50 series would mark the beginning of the end of EMD dominance. D Tower is on the left.

A Chessie System eastbound autorack train rolls through Pittsburgh on the P&LE main next to the Monongahela and Ohio rivers in June 1985. This was shot from the sidewalk of the Fort Pitt freeway bridge that crosses the Monongahela before entering the triangle of downtown Pittsburgh. No car trouble needed. The West End bridge in the distance crosses the Ohio RIver that starts right here where the Monongahela joins the Allegheny. Most through Chessie trains like this one used the P&LE main between New Castle and McKeesport to avoid the grades and curves of the B&O's P&W line. I was staying at the hotel neat the point of the Golden Triangle and walked out on the bridge before the day's meetings.

B&O 3507 works the yard job in front of the yard office. The power for RS97, with B&O 4185, is parked on the main down below while the crew gets their orders and train info from the Brooks Ave. yard office in Gates, NY on May 19, 1980.
The conductor on a CSX transfer out of C&NW’s Proviso Yard looks back at his train rocking and rolling through the crossovers at Bellwood, Illinois, on September 1, 1991. The train is entering Indiana Harbor Belt/Baltimore & Ohio Chicago Terminal trackage at CP Hill.
Chessie, B&O #4299- #4056 with a westbound crossing over at, Confluence, Pennsylvania. March 26, 1983. A little more than a year after this photo was taken, and train derailed at this location, and the tower was destroyed. The operator was killed in this derailment, may he rest in piece. You just never know what could possibly happen standing track side.
It isn't the best photo, but the only one of two I had taken of this tower, sorry to say.
A southbound mixed freight passes the shell of the tower at Leipsic, Ohio in June 1988. As the second unit shows, it was CSX by then but the lead GP40 still wears Chessie System paint with C&O lettering. In the spring and early summer of 1988, I spent a lot of time in Lima, Ohio backfilling a spot on a modernization project at the refinery. When I could get out of the plant in daylight, I would typically cruise up and down Rt 65 looking for DT&I trains on the this trackage that they shared but usually found CSX southbounds. They usually had a fleet of southbounds in the afternoon. Leipsic was a crossing of the former B&O between Toledo and Cincinnati and the former NKP mainline.

IAIS 506 & 708 pull SIBI into Rockdale as they creep through the yard passing by caboose C&O 903282. This about 50 year old caboose was painted in red C&O paint and was their “Make This Year a Safer Year” caboose. It is still earning its keep for the CSX Rockdale Job on the former Rock Island.
We drove down to North East yesterday to get a PL roster of the C&O 8272 at the railway museum.
When there was a lull from people visiting the cab I quickly climbed up and closed the door to grab a couple nice rosters.

Chesapeake & Ohio Alco C630 sits on the fuel track at Wyoming Yard in Grand Rapids on July 16, 1974. Coupled behind it are a GP9 and a GP30. At left, barely in the frame is an EMD switcher in fresh Chessie System paint. Time was just about up for the big Alcos, which would be stored by the end of the year. In 1975, C&O would sell them to Morrison Knudsen, which would rebuild them and sell them to Australia’s Robe River Iron. A scanned slide from my collection, photographer unknown.

I have a note on this slide that this was the first train with Sterling Tower on full remote auto. The train is Q136 and the date is December 23, 1988. The ballast of the former EL mainline is in the foreground.

C&O GP30 #3026 has quite a few companions as it pauses on the main at Freeland on the Ludington Subdivision. The train appears to be westbound, fresh power for Ludington and Manistee? A scanned slide from my collection take 4/24/1983 by B. Carlson.

Those who complained about shooting the dark colors of the BN Eddie Bauer 70MAC's may have also complained about Chessie System Enchantment Blue as worn by this 3 month old GP40-2 sitting at B&O's Cone Yard in East St. Louis. On the other hand, Athearn Genesis produced a model of this unit with this number at one time for the C&O fans out there.

This was one heck of a climb. It took your breath away, and you could feel your heart beating in your throat. I would NEVER be able to tackle this today. While you are sitting up there, you pray that there isn't a rock slide. They would never find you.

C&O GP9 #5946 and GP35 #3523 rest outside of the two stall engine house at Boardman Yard in Traverse City on 9/29/1978. Those glass number boards on the GP35s sure were hard to read when they got dirty, no wonder all of the railroads switched to plexiglass and acrylic!
