Le château d'If est une fortification française édifiée sur les ordres du roi François Iᵉʳ, entre 1527 et 1529 sur l'îlot d'If de l'archipel du Frioul, proche des îles de Ratonneau et Pomègues au centre de la rade de Marseille ; classé monument historique le 7 juillet 1926.

The Château d'If is a fortress located in the Frioul archipelago, situated about 1.5 kilometres offshore from Marseille. Built in the 16th century, it later served as a prison until the end of the 19th century. The fortress was demilitarized and opened to the public in 1890. It is famous for being one of the settings of Alexandre Dumas's adventure novel The Count of Monte Cristo.

This morning, I tried to catch the moonset close to Frioul islands.
I used the android app named "TPE" (The Photographer's Ephemeris) to see the place where the moon and If castle will be exactly aligned (and the time of this event).
I planned a holyday, I went to school to bring my 3 sons and I drove to the dedicated place identified in Android app. It was a place along the "corniche Kennedy" in Marseille.
The place was the proper one but unfortunately for me, the sun was too high and therefore the moon was less bright (but the castle was more visible...).
Therefore, it is a single shot and not a 2 exposure picture as I first planned to do (1 exposure for the bright moon) and 1 for the not bright place). Next time perhaps...
Edmond Dantès resta rinchiuso nel castello di IF per 14 anni. Dopo 8 anni di prigionia viene a contatto con l'Abate Faria. Questo incontro è decisivo per lui che diventa allievo e discepolo del vecchio. I due progettano di evadere insieme ma l'Abate muore. Grazie al cunicolo scavato tra le due celle, Dantès riesce a infilarsi nel sacco che doveva servire a gettare in mare il cadavere di Faria. Edmond Dantès crea così il mito dell'unico evaso dal castello di IF

L’Hôpital Caroline a été construit sur l'île de Ratonneau, au large de Marseille, entre 1823 et 1828, par Michel-Robert Penchaud.
Le but de cet hôpital était d'accueillir les voyageurs arrivant sur Marseille et qui étaient mis en quarantaine notamment lors de soupçons de fièvre jaune.
L'hôpital est utilisé jusqu'en 1941, lors d'une épidémie de typhus dans les prisons. Il est détruit par les bombardements aériens à la libération de Marseille en août 1944, et abandonné, jusqu'à l'acquisition des îles par la Ville de Marseille en 1978.

For those who are fans of the movie The Count of Monte Cristo, you might remember when Edmond Dantes was sent to prison on the island Château d'If. Apparently, the actual Château d'If turns out to be the small island closer to the coast in this image. If you haven't seen the movie (definitely, one of our favorites), you might want to check it out at some point. :)

The name Chateau D'If is from the former prison on an island south of Marseille in France. Its fame as the setting for Dumas' novel The Count of Monte Cristo has made the prison a popular tourist destination.
