Nestled in forest at 600 metres above sea‐level, the Château du Théret was built to control and tax the passage of salt to the Loire Valley and Paris and considerably extended during the reign of Louis 14th. It is reached on foot down a long drive flanked by dry stone walls, and surrounded by a moat, giving the impression that you are leaving the 21st century behind as you approach. It is currently in private hands, being slowly and authentically restored with a view to opening to the public “eventually”. The nearby wolf‐park provides a reminder that this area was inhabited by wild wolves as recently as 1901, when the last was trapped at Théret.

In the small town of Condette, northern-most France, you can find this charming little Tudor revival castle, built in the middle of the 19th century by the Englishman Sir John Hare. The castle rests on foundations much older than that, though. A castle was first built here in the 12th century, and the direct predecessor to the one now standing dated to 1222-1231, built by Philippe Hurepel de Clermont, son of the French king Philippe II Auguste. That castle was destroyed by Marie de Medici in 1615 in the religious conflict between Catholics and Protestants at the time. The place was left in ruins - but some of the defense walls survived, and this new castle were built incorporating those remains (as you can clearly see in this shot).

The first references to the Château de Fontainebleau date back to the 12th century. Since then, all the kings of France have lived in the palace, and have continuously enlarged and embellished it. It is a unique example of a royal residence, loved and cherished for over eight centuries.

State Apartments

The château was one of the major artistic centres of 16th-century Europe. The Renaissance Rooms, unique in France, have retained their stunning fresco and stucco décor created by the Italian artists Rosso and Primaticcio under the reigns of François I and Henri II.

The apartments of the sovereigns evoke all the pomp and splendour of the French court ; antechambers, drawing rooms, ceremonial rooms, the Council Room and the Throne Room all paint a vivid picture of the life of the monarchy. The carved woodwork, paintings, tapestries and furnishings provide evidence of the apartments occupancy from the 16th to the 19th century.

Refurbishment of Napoleon I’s interior apartments began in 1804. Comprised of a series of rooms for the Emperor’s private use (bedchamber, office, private drawing room, bathroom, aide-de-camp’s common room and antechamber). From here, Napoleon I abdicated on 6 April 1814.

Private Apartments

Located on the ground floor of the château, they complete the changes made for Napoleon I, who wanted two private adjoining apartments, one for himself, and the other for Josephine (later occupied by Marie-Louise). There are also rooms that were reserved for the use of the Emperor’s close advisors and the Stag Gallery.

Château de Sceaux never fails to create dramatic mood in its beautiful and somewhat mysterious garden.

Happy Halloween! 🎃

Château Ollwiller is one of the only two châteaux in Alsace to produce wine under the name "château".

He owns the "Clos de la Tourelle", a plot decorated with an old turret, entirely planted with the Pinot Blanc grape.

The castle is the origin of the name of the Grand Cru Ollwiller.

Its vineyard has a plot of Riesling in the Grand Cru Ollwiller planted in 1925, with the "Vieilles Vigne" label.

The construction of the first Château Ollwiller in Alsace dates back to the 13th century by the counts of Waldner on an agricultural and wine-growing fiefdom belonging to the counts of Ferrette and whose sovereign was the bishop of Strasbourg and then of the Cistercian abbey of Lieu-Croissant ( Doubs).

In the 18th century, Count Dagobert de Waldner de Freundstein, lieutenant general of the king, built a superb castle where many important figures of the time stayed, including Louis XV.

The château and the estate were acquired in 1825 by Jacques-Gabriel Gros, a textile industrialist, who turned the agricultural estate into a model farm and a renowned vineyard.

Destroyed during the First World War during the Battle of Vieil Armand, the castle was rebuilt in 1925. The wine estate and the castle still belong to the Gros family.

The Château de Pierrefonds is a majestic and beautiful palace which has weathered the whims of kings for hundreds of years and is certain to be a favorite of any Paris visitor.

Original built by Philippe d' Orléans in the 15th century and demolished on the order of Louis XIII in the 17th century. 200 years later Napoleon III ordered that Château de Pierrefonds be rebuilt as an imperial residence. This work was undertaken by one of the greatest designers of the day-Viollet-le-Duc, and it is often cited as his greatest work.

The Château de Pierrefonds features a permanent exhibition of the masterpieces of 19th century ornamentation produced by the Monduit workshops. These expert craftsmen restored a wealth of historical monuments, worked extensively for the Great Exhibitions of 1889 and 1900, and helped to create the Statue of Liberty.

Château de Pierrefonds rises majestically out of the Compiègne forest. It is both imposing and spectacularly beautiful, with particularly lovely grounds. Enjoy a relaxing stroll through these tranquil gardens for free
