A lot has happened since I was last on here. This was taken back in the summer when it was still warm in the UK and the days were long. It’s now very much autumn here in South Wales and we’re starting to hunker down. Life’s been busy, but we’re all ok, trust my fellow Flickr-ites are too. Thanks for stopping

Great Britain, London, Millennium Bridge, a steel suspension bridge for pedestrians overpass the River Thames in London, located between the Southwark Bridge & the Blackfriars Railway Bridge, connecting Bankside with the City of London.
The construction began in 1998 & opened in June 2000. The nickname for the bridge the "Wobbly Bridge". On opening day the bridge was crisscrossed by around 90.000 people, with up to 2.000 on the bridge at any one time. After pedestrians felt unforeseen vacillating motion, the vibrational modes had not been anticipated by the designers. On opening day the bridge was closed later & after two days of restricted admittance, closed for almost two years while adjustments were made to eradicate the motion & reopened in 2002.
The problem was fixed by the retrofitting of 37 energy dissipating dampers to control horizontal movement and 52 inertial dampers to control vertical movement

Great Britain, London, the City Hall, located on the River Thames in the London Borough of Southwark, designed by Foster + Partners & completed in 2002. It is the home to the Mayor of London, the London Assembly & the approx. 600 permanent staff who work for the GLA.
The 10 floors building is 45 metres high, in conventional terms, the building has no front or back; its shape is derived from a geometrically modified sphere, this hybrid form is designed to minimise the surface area exposed to direct sunlight.

Great Britain, London, Royal Albert Hall. …what would be London without a little rain shower,…& the hour after.
The Royal Albert Hall concert hall in South Kensington with a capacity of up to 5,272 seats opened by Queen Victoria in 1871 became one of the UK's most treasured & distinctive building. The Hall is a registered charity held in trust for the nation & receives no public or government funding.
Almost 400 shows in the main auditorium are presented yearly, from classical, rock & pop concerts, ballet & opera with the world's leading artists, over film screenings, award ceremonies, school & community events, charity presentations to culinary events. In addition approximately another 400 events are held each year in the non-auditorium spaces.
Originally the hall was supposed to been called the Central Hall of Arts & Sciences. The name was changed to the Royal Albert Hall of Arts & Sciences by Queen Victoria upon laying the Hall's foundation stone in 1867, in memory of her husband consort, Prince Albert who had died six years earlier.

Great Britain, London, western departures King's Cross railway station concourse, featuring Europe’s largest single span station structure, being the heart of the development with 1,400 photovoltaic panels incorporated into the roof, which generate about ten per cent of the building’s energy needs.
The steel structure of the roof, engineered by Arup, has been defined as being "like some kind of inversed waterfall, a white steel grid with special light effects swoops up from the ground & cascades over your commuters".
The central London railway terminus which was opened in 1852 in the Kings Cross area on the northern edge of central London. It is one of the busiest railway stations in the United Kingdom, being the southern terminus of the East Coast Main Line to North East England and Scotland.
The new western departures concourse of the King's Cross railway station opened in March 2012, just in time for the London Olympics.

Great Britain, London, Thames Barrier, a movable flood barrier in the River Thames east of Central London, been operational since 1984. The barrier prevents the floodplain of all but the easternmost boroughs of Greater London from being flooded by exceptionally high tides & storm floods moving up from the North Sea. When needed, it is closed during high tide; at low tide it can be opened to restore the river's flow towards the sea.
The Thames Barrier spans 520 metres across the River Thames near Woolwich & protects 125 square kilometres of central London from flooding caused by tidal surges. It has 10 steel gates that can be raised into position across the River Thames. When raised, the main gates stand as high as a 5-storey building and as wide as the opening of Tower Bridge. Each main gate weighs 3,300 tonnes.

Great Britain, London, …every now & then there is a grey sky over London, the Ferris wheel “London Eye”, a giant observation wheel designed by the architectural team of David Marks & Julia Barfield as a landmark for the new Millennium opened in March 2000. Located between Westminster Bridge & Hungerford Bridge in the Jubilee Gardens on the South Bank of the river Thames. The wheel is 135 mtr high, the rim has a diameter of 120 mtr the structure was built with over 1700 t of steel & more than 3000 tons of concrete for the foundations as part of London's millennium celebrations.
The futuristic high-tech looking 32 sealed air-conditioned passenger capsules are attached to the external circumference of the wheel & rotated by electric motors.
Each capsule represents one of the London Boroughs, accommodating up to 25 passengers who are free to walk around inside the capsule, nevertheless seating is provided. The wheel rotates at 26 cm per second, about 0.9 km/h, so that one revolution takes about 30 minutes. Each egg-shaped capsule is 8 meters long & weighs 10 tons, 80 spokes connect the rim with the spindle.
The observation wheel is the tallest Ferris wheel in Europe, it turns slow enough for people to embark while it is moving, on a clear day you can see as far as 40 km.

Great Britain, London, Canary Wharf in east London one of the United Kingdom's two main financial centres, 1802 to 1939 was this area one of the busiest docks in the world, after the 1960s, the port industry began to decline, leading to all the docks being closed by 1980. The Canary Wharf of today began when Michael von Clemm, former chairman of Credit Suisse First Boston had the idea to convert Canary Wharf into a back office, further discussions led to proposals for today’s new business district.

Great Britain, London, 30 St Mary Axe building, generally better known under its nickname “The Gherkin“. The 41 story, 180 mtr tall commercial skyscraper in London's principal financial district with construction initiated in 2001, was completed in December 2003 & opened in April 2004 in St Mary Axe, the street from which the tower takes its name.
The building in 30 St Mary Axe was designed by Norman Foster & Arup Group, the building has become another landmark of London & is one of the city's most widely recognised examples of contemporary architecture.

In 1977 the spans of the bridge was painted red, white & blue for Queen Elizabeth II silver jubilee, originally it was painted in a mid-greenish-blue colour.

Great Britain, London, Millennium Dome on the River Thames in Greenwich, referred to simply as "The Dome".
The massive construction official name is "The O2". The Dome was initiated originally used to house the Millennium Experience, a major exhibition celebrating the beginning of the third millennium. The central structure is time being the largest dome in the world & is nearly twice the area of the former record holder, the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, U.S., it is the eighth-largest building in the world by usable volume & has become among one of the United Kingdom's most recognizable landmarks.
The canopy as the roof is made of PTFE coated glass fibre fabric, a durable & weather-resistant plastic. The dome, which were completed in mid 1998, create an interior floor area of more than 80,000 square mtr. The roof measures 320 mtr in diameter, with a total extension of some 90,000 square mtr, reaching a maximum height of 52 mtr. in the middle, 1 mtr for each week. The roof assembly is supported by a web of 2,600 cables suspended from a circle of 12 steel masts, inclined slightly from vertical, that rise nearly 100 metres, designed by architect Sir Richard Rogers.
The structure was then sold in December 2001& in 2007 the renovated building, which included a 20,000-seat auditorium, reopened as "The O2"; it was named after a mobile phone company.

The bridge is 244 mtr long with two towers each 65 mtr high, the central span of 61 m between the towers is split into two equal bascules, which can be raised to an angle of 86 degrees to allow river traffic to pass. In 1977 the spans of the bridge was painted red, white & blue for Queen Elizabeth II silver jubilee, originally it was painted in a mid-greenish-blue colour.

Old Guard from St James ,viewed from the the Victoria Memorial looking down the Mall
After a recent visit to St James where I took some photos of the old guard changing I have decided that I will take more photos of the changing of the guard process. Changing of the Guard can not be watched all the way through from one spot. Various elements start & finish in different places. There is also the issue of crowds as it is a popular watch. So it will take me some time to completely cover the whole event. Getting to look at the main parade in front of Buckingham Palace may be an issue as it fills up very early.
Great Britain, London, …."Pigeon Parade", Buckingham Palace, in 1911 the gates & railings of the Buckingham Palace were completed; the North-Centre Gate is the everyday entrance to the Palace, while the larger centre gates are only for ceremonial use & the departure of the guard after Changing the Guard. The left gate remains closed due to the proximity of the high road traffic frequented Buckingham Gate.
