The high altitude valley with magnificent peaks and Chandra river accompanying....taken near Batal, HImachal Pradesh, India

It was my birthday last week - no you don't need to know how old I am, let's just agree that I'm old enough to know better. I was gifted some glorious things from my beloved friends and one cheeky sister in SL. Zaara Kohime gifted me the set of her Surya and Chandra earrings, now at C88. These are a continuation of her Shairi collection.

They come with a chain that goes up to a bun and you can see that here on Zaara's stream however I have what Aussies call a big boofhead, and for that to fit me I would have had to resize them to the point where they'd look like hubcaps.

Also wearing Selena II hair by Doux, Black Magic makeup by Alaskametro and the Morticia group gift gown by BTTB - and its only for boys!

Devious Mind - Asteria

No more gachas? I am hoping the "clever" people will come up with something to replace them. Along with quite a few others, I have had a grand passion for the gacha outfits that Chandra Meehan of Devious Mind has produced over these many years. She seemed to have a gacha machine at every event and I certainly contributed to them in a big way. I don't know if Asteria was her last one but it was fairly recent and it will feature in a dance of mine in the very near future as her costumes have done often in the past. This very charming outfit I'm wearing which is only commons, I did not score any rares, is called Asteria in Seaweed tone, far prettier than one would expect from that name. Here's to more Devious Mind costumes in whatever way she chooses to replace her gachas. The hairpiece is a Lode gacha item.

Chandra Taal (meaning the Lake of the Moon), or Chandra Tal, is situated at an altitude of about 4,300 metres (14,100 ft) in the Himalayas. Mountains of scree overlook the lake on one side, and a magnificent cirque presents a view on the other. The name of the lake originates from its crescent shape. Situated in the Spiti part of the Lahul and Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh (India), it is a popular destination for trekkers and campers. The lake is accessible on foot from Batal as well as from Kunzum Pass from late May to early October. There is also a motorable road from Batal which is 16 km (9.9 mi) away from Chandra Taal, but before August, its condition can be bad. The road from Kunzum Pass is accessible only on foot, and it is about 8 km (5.0 mi) from Chandra Taal. Suraj Tal is also accessible Chandra Taal, 30 km (19 mi) away.[1] Vast meadows on the banks of the lake are the camping sites. During springtime, these meadows are carpeted with hundreds of kinds of wildflowers.

The most surprising thing about this lake is that there is no visible source of this lake but there is a visible outlet which means that water to this lake comes from underground.

The lake is situated on the Samudra Tapu plateau, which overlooks the Chandra River.

The lake is one of two high-altitude wetlands of India which have been designated as Ramsar sites.

Chandra Taal or the lake of the moon is a gem in Spiti valley, Himachal Pradesh, India. One has to trek 2.5 Km at 14700feet height to see this gem.

Bara-lacha la also known as Bara-lacha Pass, or Bārā Lācha La, (el. 4,890 m or 16,040 ft) is a high mountain pass in Zanskar range, connecting Lahaul district in Himachal Pradesh to Ladakh in Jammu and Kashmir, situated along the Leh–Manali Highway.

The Bhaga river, a tributary of the Chandrabhaga or Chenab river, originates from Surya taal lake, which is situated a few of kilometers from the pass towards Manali. The other major tributary of the Chandrabhaga, the Chandra also originates from glacier in this region. The pass also acts as a water-divide between the Bhaga river and the Yunam river.

Sephisa chandra subsp. androdamas Fruhstorfer, 1908

Etymology:

a wide-field view of the Puppis A supernova remnant along with a close-up image of the neutron star, known as RX J0822-4300, that is moving at a blistering pace. The larger field-of-view is a composite of X-ray data from the ROSAT satellite (pink) and optical data (purple), from the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory 0.9-meter telescope, which highlights oxygen emission. Astronomers think Puppis A was created when a massive star ended its life in a supernova explosion about 3,700 years ago, forming an incredibly dense object called a neutron star and releasing debris into space. The neutron star was ejected by the explosion.

An afternoon with the beautiful Chandra.

Chandra Taal or Lake of the Moon is a lake in the Spiti part of Lahaul & Spiti valley in Himachal Pradesh near the high altitude Kunzam Pass.It is situated at an altitude of 14100 feet above sea level. It gets its name from its crescent shape. It is situated on Samudra Tapu Plateau overlooking the Chandra River. There is no visible source of the lake but there is an outlet and the source is probably underground.

I could have probably got better shots of the lake if I had gone down to its shore. However we had reached the lake after a tiring journey of about 6 hours over very bad roads and we had to walk for about half a kilometer from where we had parked our vehicle to reach this spot.It might not sound much but try walking uphill at an altitude of 14000 feet and you will understand why i satisfied myself with these shots instead of going down to the lake.:-)

...at least, that's what it looks like from this perspective... :)

More goofing around with Chandra's rose. Much better view of the rose from this angle.

Galaxy NGC 6503 is part of a large survey of more than 100 galaxies conducted by Chandra that looked for evidence of growing black holes. A new study uncovered evidence that stellar-mass black holes in these dense environments are ripping apart multiple stars, and then using their debris to fuel their growth. The Chandra results provide one pathway for the creation of "intermediate mass black holes," a class that are bigger than the stellar-mass variety but smaller than supermassive black holes. Chandra data is shown with optical images from the Hubble Space Telescope.

Scientists have found fragments of titanium blasting out of a famous supernova. This discovery, made with NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory, could be a major step in pinpointing exactly how some giant stars explode.

This work is based on Chandra observations of the remains of a supernova called Cassiopeia A (Cas A), located in our galaxy about 11,000 light-years from Earth. This is one of the youngest known supernova remnants, with an age of about 350 years.

For years, scientists have struggled to understand how massive stars – those with masses over about 10 times that of the Sun – explode when they run out of fuel. This result provides an invaluable new clue.

Astronomers taking inventory of the material in the local universe keep coming up short. A new result from NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory about a system of colliding galaxy clusters may help explain this shortfall.

Although scientists know a great deal about the composition of the universe, there has been a vexing problem they have struggled to explain – there is a significant amount of matter that has not yet been accounted for.

This missing mass is not the invisible dark matter, which makes up a majority of the matter in the universe. This is a separate puzzle where about a third of the “normal” matter that was created in the first billion years or so after the big bang has yet to be detected by observations of the local universe, that is, in regions less than a few billion light-years from Earth. This matter is made up of hydrogen, helium, and other elements and makes up objects like stars, planets, and humans.

Scientists have proposed that at least some of this missing mass could be hidden in gigantic strands, or filaments, of warm to hot (temperatures of 10,000 to 10,000,000 kelvins) gas in the space in between galaxies and clusters of galaxies. They have dubbed this the “warm-hot intergalactic medium,” or WHIM.

A team of astronomers using Chandra to observe a system of colliding galaxy clusters has likely found evidence of this WHIM residing in the space between them.
