This many years into SL, I didn't think I had the capacity to be surprised. But I apparently do. And I was surprised in the best way - in meeting someone awesome. Das Dampfschiff "Cerberus" wurde im Jahr 1930 von der Werft Hubertina (ehem. W. H. Jacobs) im niederländischen Haarlem gebaut. Auftraggeber waren die Amsterdamer Häfen, bei denen das Fahrzeug den Namen "Havendienst 1" trug. Das Schiff wurde als Schlepper, als Polizei- und Feuerlöschboot und für allgemeine Arbeitszwecke eingesetzt. Die heutige "Cerberus" ist mit einer stehend eingebauten Zweizylinder-Verbund-Dampfmaschine ausgerüstet, die 180 PS leistet. Seit 1988 ist das Westfälische Industriemuseum Eigner des Schiffs.
Die Bilder aus dem Schleusenpark Waltrop habe ich im April 2010 aufgenommen und auch schon einmal auf Flickr präsentiert. Mit der Zeit gefiel mir aber die damalige Ausarbeitung nicht mehr so recht. Deshalb habe ich die Fotos noch einmal "entwickelt" und zeige sie nun erneut.
Englisch translation:
The steamship "Cerberus" was built in 1930 by the Hubertina shipyard (formerly W. H. Jacobs) in Haarlem, Netherlands. It was commissioned by the Amsterdam ports, where it was named "Havendienst 1" (Harbor Service 1). The ship was used as a tugboat, a police and fireboat, and for general work purposes. The current "Cerberus" is equipped with a vertically mounted, two-cylinder compound steam engine producing 180 hp. The Westphalian Industrial Museum has owned the ship since 1988.
I took the photos from the Waltrop Lock Park in April 2010 and have previously posted them on Flickr. Over time, however, I became less satisfied with the original presentation. Therefore, I have re-edited the photos and am now showing them again.
In Greek mythology, Cerberus (often referred to as the hound of Hades) is a multi-headed dog that guards the gates of the underworld.
The HMS Cerberus, like its namesake, was an Australian WW1 naval ship that defended the "land down under". She was decommissioned in in 1924 when she was sold for scrap. The Cerberus was scuttled in Melbourne's Half Moon Bay, where she sits in 3.0m of water, about 200m from shore.
