This is รberseequartier Underground Station on Hamburg's U4 underground in the HafenCity district. For the development of HafenCity a new underground line was built and started on August 23rd 2007 with a ground breaking ceremony by Mayor Ole von Beust. The first work on รberseequartier underground station was done in an open construction style. Later a TBM took over. In the summer of 2010, the interior work of the underground station began.
The subway station is 19.5 meters below ground level and 14 meters below sea level (in the Elbe ;-). The design was drawn up by "netzwerkarchitekten" in Darmstadt. Their design envisages cladding walls with blue, ceramic-coated glass tiles that are darker towards the bottom and give the suggestion one is entering an underwater world. In this vision the platform is located in the middle of the blue ocean, with the depths of the sea on the walls. The silver sheets on the ceiling should give the impression of a water surface. To underline this the walls of the station become brighter and brighter giving you the impression one floats in the middle of the sea, directly under the sunny surface. The passenger slowly appear on the spacious access areas with a variety of visual relationships and a horizontally structured wall paneling, which is brighter in blue tone.
As a permanent art installation are in addition to the escalators in each lamp square speakers, from which penetrate the sound of water and other maritime sounds. This enhances the visual "underwater impression" even further; also the need to use the lavatory. Luckily the is one in the station. Mental note: bring 50 cent.
Technical stuff
This panorama consist of 29 individual photos. For a roughly 195 degree pano, this normally for too much. But in this case itโs needed due the large number of horizontal lines. The amount of photos helped me to compensate for the curvature that comes with a pano of this magnitude. Not surprisingly, the final pano resulted in a file of 1,55 GB. The initial stitching was done with PS CC, using two sets of photos, to avoid getting people in the final image. The initial stitching was almost perfect. Some slight touch-ups were needed to correct some errors.
Further post-production was also done with PS CC. This include colour toning, balancing the lighting, giving the escalators a bright and silver look, enhancing the contrast in some parts of the photo and using the curves and saturation tools to give the images more umph! Finally I added the copyright watermarks. The latter is, alas, there to stay due to the frequent copying of my photos. So, don't bother commenting on that.
