CC Most Versatile - Centered Composition
A frontal study of the UN Secretariat’s teal grid with a ferry streaking across the river. Overcast light flattens color just enough to let the façade pattern and skyline layers take the lead.
While I'm not in Hawaii, I sure would love to be. Hannah here is saying Aloha with her first bloom of 2025, and four more blooms still developing. CC, January Most Versatile, Centered Composition. Week 1, Contrast.
The Flickr Lounge-Centered Composition
I found this tiny Silver Maple Leaf in the backyard hanging from a Spider's Web from the mother tree. Normally I wouldn't put the subject in the center of the photo, but it's for today's Flickr Lounge Challenge so that is where it went!
The first light of dawn rises over Sunrise Lake, setting the world ablaze with the colors of October. The air was still, the water calm, and the bench—perfectly centered before the reflection—felt like an invitation to pause and take it all in. Sometimes, finding balance isn’t about symmetry in the frame, but in the quiet moments between night and day. For this week’s theme, I chose to center the bench as the still point between earth, sky, and water—a simple reminder that peace often sits waiting for us, right where we are.
I have always taught my students to avoid a dead-center composition. Yet, this foreboding image demanded to be conveyed this way: Like a gloomy classical surrealist painting.
There is something unnerving I find in this image, almost causing physical discomfort: Like the deep bass tones used to foreshadow the worst that is yet to come, in horror movies, causing an involuntary shiver along the spine, and sweaty palms.
This abandoned and dilapidated building, in Panjim, Goa, had warning signs and quarantine boards outside, and strange patches of orange slime and almost glowing yellow-green fungus growing on the walls. I never did find out what had transpired there, and I am not sure I would want to.
My first attempt at taking "Zen" style photos.
Taken at Khadakwasla waterfront. Got lot of help from my kids to build these rock towers. Each one is about 2 feet high (but look much bigger at 10mm wide on the crop sensor).
Canon 550D + Canon 10-18mm. Shutter Priority: 30 Seconds exposure.
Had to use f/22 since I did not have the ND filter.. will take these shots again once I get my hands on the ND filter.
The rocks were "accidentally" lit while my son was taking shots of the rocks with flash ON.
Trying a "Centered" composition this time... Also have shots where the rocks are on the bottom thirds.. but this one is looking better for me. Making an impact :)

A short walk from work led me to the Cuyahoga County Courthouse in Downtown Cleveland—a Beaux-Arts gem completed in 1912. The moment I stepped inside, I noticed its grandeur: a sweeping marble staircase that spirals upward, framed by intricate marble stonework and timeless craftsmanship.
Halfway up, I paused before one of the building’s most beautiful features—a stained glass window titled Justice, designed by Frederick Wilson of Tiffany and Cleveland architect Charles F. Schweinfurth, and executed by Gorham Glass Works of New York. Rich in color and symbolism, it anchors the space with wonderfully.
The staircase and window alone made the visit worthwhile.

I spotted a beautiful red Jaguar convertible sports car in the parking garage where I work. As I was walking into the building, I took a closer look at it and admired the logo on the front grille. I snapped a few photos, and this one turned out to be my favorite.
The chandelier from Day 15 revisited; after a slight scare (it came unscrewed and dropped about two feet as I was rehanging the last of the 'crystals'), it is all clean and sparkly. This has a little creative white balance and color adjustment applied to add color to the 'brass and glass' fixture...

A small water colour painting I did of a lovely lake in Quebec Canada.
Max and I spent the day hiking in El Yunque rainforest. It's amazing. First off, we had a crazy adventure trying to find it. The main road was closed (landslide?), so we had to take some back roads. Thankfully, I had bought a Lonely Planet book and they had a decent map of the area. So we drove and drove and drove until we realized we had missed a turn and were kind of lost. But don't worry, there was another way to get there, that wasn't too far out of the way. Little did we know, that way was a trecherous, teeny tiny road that twisted up through the mountains. Barely two cars could fit on it, so if someone drove past you, you had to hold your breath and hope you didn't get hit.
After nearly dying of hyperventilation from the drive, we made it to El Yunque. We decided to hike down to La Mina Falls and go swimming down there. Along the way, I saw a spider off to the side, and decided to take its photo. When I saw the photo, I realized there was a whole web I hadn't even seen before. I've always wanted to take a spider/web photo, and Max convinced me it should be the photo of the day.
The rest of the day we spent avoiding the rain, swimming in a pool at the bottom of a water fall, and eating delicious food! You should check out the photos of one of the most beautiful places ever. Here's the link to my shots (it starts about halfway down the page).

Where the river changes sides.
The Genesee River hugs the west side of the gorge as it enters the Hogsback flood plain then cuts through the middle to hug east side (where I am standing) as it exits.
We well call this a #centeredcomposition for this weeks' @deviantArt WeeklyFotoChallenge, since center frame is the only place you can actually see the river water.
Two weeks ago my wife and I drove down to the east overlook by the Mount Morris dam and the north end of Letchworth State Park. Then she drove a mile to the Hogsback Overlook and sat and read while I walked the rim trail to meet her.
