The ceiling frescoes in the Freising cathedral.

The cathedral of Freising was built in Romanesque style from 1159 to 1205. First change to the interior was the replacement of the flat Romanesque wooden ceiling by a Gothic vault ceiling during 1481 to 1483. In a further change during the Baroque period the Gothic vault ribs were removed, the final change was the Rococo decoration created around 1724 by the brothers Cosmas Damian Asam and Egid Quirin Asam.

The mosaics behind the altar is perhaps one of the most famous from late antiquity / early medieval there is - dating from the 5th century. It depicts Jesus in the middle in golden robes with the Torah in his hand. St Paul is to the left of him, and St Peter to the right. The twins Cosma and Damiano are standing behind them, one on each side (though it is impossible to tell who's who - they are depicted as identical twins). To the far right is St Theodore - and to the far left the founder of the church pope Felix IV, holding a model of the church. Felix is actually a reconstruction (but generally thought to be well done) since a later pope replaced him with a portrait of pope Gregory the Great(!). Felix was restored in the 17th century.

The church Santi Cosma e Damiano was founded in 527 by Theodore the Great when he and his daughter Amalasuntha donated two buildings to pope Felix IV - the buildings being the Temple of Romulus and the Temple of Peace, built by emperor Vespasian. These buildings are the foundation for this church. Today it is hard to see how it is possible - standing in the church you can, through a window, look down into the Romulus temple. But this is due to the in the early 17th century the floor in the church was raised with some 7 metres and a new entrance was made - and left the temple of Romulus back at (the old) ground level. The same renovation also added new side chapels and a new ceiling.

At Frederiksborg Castle (Danish: Frederiksborg Slot), which is a royal castle built in a northern Renaissance style, for the Danish king Christian IV. The main building of the castle was built 1602-1620 (replacing an older structure). For a long time it served as a royal residence, but it was almost completely destroyed in a fire 1859 (which spared only the chapel and audience chamber). The castle was restored, using old plans and drawings to give it its proper look - with generous donations made by J.C. Jabosen (who made a fortune founding the Carlsberg brewery), to turn it into a National Museum, which it still is to this day.

So yes, this is a 19th century vision of how a Renaissance ceiling should look like.

The church is mostly known as Bath abbey - but the full name is the Abbey Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul. It is now an Anglican church, but it started out as an abbey church to a Benedictine monastery. A church was first built on this spot in the 7th century - but the current building dates from the 12th to the 16th century (with some major restorations made in the 1860s, including to the ceiling and finishing the vaulting that had been partly abandoned back in the day - probably for financial reasons) and one of the better examples of the Gothic perpendicular style.

There's peace, I'm sure

And I know there'll be no more
