The festival “Creating Niches. Feedback from the Zodiak Free Arts Lab (1968)” September 2021, held (almost) at its old Kreuzberg location, tried to satisfy that desire—without leaning too heavily on the familiar narrative that electronic music, Kraftwerk, and techno were Germany’s payback for Elvis and the Beatles. And yes, the concerts showed what improvised electronic music might have become, had it not been turned into a production tool for low-budget disco.
A listening example appeared in 2023: the set by Taste Tribes, consisting of Hans Joachim Irmler (Faust), Günter Müller (Nachtluft), Wolfgang Seidel (Eruption), and—present only virtually at the concert—Alfred Harth (Just Music, Goebbels/Harth). Their music draws on the unhurried sense of time characteristic of the “Berlin School,” but completely avoids the romantic overtones typical of Klaus Schulze or Tangerine Dream, who, like the members of Taste Tribes, also gained formative experience at the Zodiak. Fittingly, the record is titled Nischen (“Niches”)—highly recommended for those exasperated by electronic dance music.
The two Taste Tribes releases (2008 and 2023) feature four graffiti-like figures on their covers—visual signatures representing the four members of the “tribes.”
