Turning backwards, it is realized that in this high point of the ruins of the Pilaloma there are other ruins of the two lateral enclosures with their doors facing the Castle. These two enclosures leave a narrow intermediate runner of 0.80m which, coinciding with the longitudinal axis of the entire trapezoid, advances to its major base. Interestingly, the corridor divides into two elongated sections equal to Pilaloma, and goes through the Wanka that marks the multiple tomb. All these elements (geometry, tomb, wanka, corridor, orientation, etc.) have led to interpret the site as a testimony of something more transcendent of the Cañari culture. Indeed, the latest archaeoastronomic studies assert that the corridor and the wanka were associated with the observation of the sun on the summer solstice, on June 21.
The best new cadets from each company were presented a commandant's coin from Brig. Gen. I just love these little islands of life loosely known as nurse logs. This one happens to be a stump, but it is a haven for all kinds of living things and clearly this little colony is thriving.
Le Gallerie di Base del Ceneri e del Gottardo rientrano ormai nelle tratte comunemente percorse durante il processo di test ed omologazione di nuovi veicoli in Svizzera. Altri esempi sono la Bahn2000, la linea di Schwarzenburg o il Vallese nei pressi di Martigny; tutte tratte che per un motivo o per l’altro si prestano a venir testate.
A fine novembre 2020 è stato il turno dei nuovi RABe 528 MIKA per farci visita in Ticino, ben lontano dal loro normale raggio di impiego.
Sono state effettuate diverse corse notturne nel GBT e nel CBT. Di certo non ho mancato quest’occasione di vedere qualcosa di esotico nella mia regione… e così, attorno a mezzanotte, fotografo una doppia trazione di MIKA effettua una breve pausa in stazione a Lugano tra una corsa e l’altra.
Nel 2021, i RABe 528 si sono presentati di nuovo in Ticino, questa volta in quadrupla trazione e alla luce del sole. Anche gli scatti di questi test seguiranno.
Der Ceneri- und der Gotthard-Basistunnel gehören heute zu den Strecken, die bei der Erprobung und Zulassung von Neufahrzeugen in der Schweiz häufig genutzt werden. Weitere Beispiele sind die Bahn2000, die Schwarzenburglinie oder das Wallis bei Martigny; alle Strecken, die sich aus dem einen oder anderen Grund für Tests eignen.
Ende November 2020 waren die neuen RABe 528 MIKA an der Reihe, uns im Tessin zu besuchen, weit weg von ihrem normalen Einsatzgebiet.
Es wurden mehrere Nachtfahrten im GBT und CBT durchgeführt. Diese Gelegenheit, etwas Exotisches in meiner Region zu sehen, habe ich mir natürlich nicht entgehen lassen... und so fotografiere ich gegen Mitternacht eine MIKA-Doppeltraktion, die im Bahnhof von Lugano eine kurze Pause einlegt.
Im Jahr 2021 erschienen die RABe 528 erneut im Tessin, diesmal in Vierfachtraktion und bei Tageslicht. Auch von diesen Tests werden zu einem späteren Zeitpunkt Bilder zu sehen sein.
Noch knapp ein Jahr dauert es bis zum Fahrplanwechsel 2020/21. Ab dann werden hier in der Weströhre des Ceneri-Basistunnel kommerzielle Züge Richtung Norden den Tunnel verlassen. Das Gleis rechts im Bild führt in Richtung Giubiasco, das linke Gleis Richtung Locarno.

After almost 22 years of service for Safeguard, X307 CBT (along with sister 308) was retired in June 2023, and sold for “preservation” the following month to the “South England Transport Preservation Group”.
Unfortunately, it’s time in their care wasn’t the best as far as I’m aware, resulting in many complaints to Safeguard that summer about its use as a playbus at Chichester coach park and other locations on the south coast.
Then the “Southern Bus Preservation Group” offered assistance to the owner and 307 moved to their yard in Surrey during August.
But another trip to the Chichester area (where it’s owner resided) in early 2024 resulted in further adverse comments arriving at the Safeguard office.
In a surprise move, it was bought back by the company and delivered back to their depot on 27th February.
Another surprise was the arrival of a scrap dealer’s truck on 7th March, which took it away and it was sadly “processed” within 48hrs.
A very sad end for a fine bus, with still so much life left in it after being cosseted by Safeguard’s late Engineering Manager during it's long service life with the company.
It would be nice to say that parts of it will live on and aid sister bus 308 in the future, but annoyingly the process was so rapid there was no chance for me to even see 307 before departure, let alone acquire any parts for 308!
A very sad story.
In much better times, 307 is seen in service amongst the daffs for what would be the last time at the cathedral roundabout in Spring 2023.

Everything new cadets learned throughout Cadet Basic Training this summer were put to the test during the Kennedy Challenge at Camp Buckner Aug. 10. Whereas the Lambka Challenge during the first detail of CBT was a squad-level event, the Kennedy Challenge tested new cadets and their leadership based on their abilities to work as platoons. Events included air assault obstacles on the Marne Confidence Course, drill and ceremony, based on a drill competition model, tactical casualty care and communications and fire team live fire exercise. New cadets were also graded on their response to a chemical attack by how quickly and correctly they donned and sealed their protective masks, after which they had to move casualties out of the area before putting on additional protective gear. The final event before attending a memorial for Maj. Tom Kennedy, to whom the challenge and cadet task force was named, the platoon had to move a Zodiac raft about 40 meters from the dock to a floating platform before swimming the rest of the length of Lake Popolopen to the shore.
