[D559] Route Saint-Barthélémy 11/06/2017 13h57

A beautiful view point near the red cliffs of the Massif de l'Esterel along the D559 between Théoule-sur-Mer and Anthéor (roughly in between Cannes and Saint-Raphaël).

Massif de l'Esterel

The Esterel Massif (in Occitan Provençal: Esterèu; French: Massif de l'Esterel) is a Mediterranean coastal mountain range in the departments of Var and Alpes-Maritimes in Provence, south-east France.

eighbouring cities are Mandelieu and Cannes on the east and Saint-Raphaël / Fréjus on the west.

The soil and rocks of the range are of volcanic origin, composed mainly of porphyry, which gives the hills a red color. The terrain is rugged, with deep ravines and oak forests. The highest point of the massif is Mont Vinaigre (618 metres).

The massif covers an area of 320 km², of which 130 km² are officially protected in the Forêt domaniale de l'Esterel (National Forest of Esterel). The nature reserve offers hiking and mountain biking trails including the GR 49 and GR 51. The Esterel mountains also host the Pierre et Vacances holiday village Cap Estérel.

[N7] Villeneuve-Loubet 11/06/2017 09h16

An originial icon of the Nationale 7 in Villeneuve-Loubet where the Route Départementale D6007 is named Route Nationale 7. No idea what this used to be in the good old days.

Route Nationale 7

The Route nationale 7, or RN 7, is a trunk road (nationale) in France between Paris and the border with Italy. It was also known as Route des vacances (Vacation Road), Route bleue (Blue Road), and — sarcastically, during the annual rush to the Mediterranean beaches — the Route de la mort (Road of Death).

The Romans under Marcus Agrippa established a network of roads in 20 AD radiating from the then capital of the Gauls at Lugdunum (Lyon), known collectively as Via Agrippa. From Lugdunum the road north passed towards Lutèce (Paris) following roughly the route of current RN 6, and southward towards Rome, skirting the Rhone and passing through Arausio (Orange) and following the edge of the Mediterranean, like the current RN 7.

In the 15th century, with the creation of the royal post by Louis XI, a coherent network of roads was set up. The routes from Paris to Lyon pass through Moulins (route du Bourbonnais) or Dijon (route de Bourgogne). In the next century the first regular use of the road is made and elms were planted along the ways for shade and to mark the route. At that time (1553) the Le Guide des chemins de France ("Guide to the roads of France"), by the royal printer Robert Estienne, the ancestor of all the modern guidebooks, was published.

Length: 1,000 kilometers

Declassifications: D 7, D 607, D 2007, D 907, D 307, D 7n, D N7, D 6007

Northernmost point: Parvis de Notre-Dame Point Zéro à Paris

Extreme South: Menton border with Italy

Régions crossing: Île-de-France, Centre, Bourgogne, Auvergne, Rhône-Alpes, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur. (15 départements)

Autoroute A8

The A8 autoroute, also known as La Provençale, is a 224-kilometer-long highway in France that runs between Aix-en-Provence and the A7 to the Côte d'Azur.

The A8 is an extension of the A7 starting to the west of Aix-en-Provence at La Fare-les-Oliviers. The road passes through the Departments of Bouches-du-Rhône, Var and Alpes-Maritimes. It serves the towns of Aix-en-Provence, Fréjus, Saint-Raphaël, Mandelieu-la-Napoule, Cannes, Antibes, Nice, Monaco and Menton before crossing the border where it becomes the A10 in Italy. It crosses the mountain ranges of Sainte-Baume and of Maures between Aix-en-Provence and Fréjus and it Massif de l'Esterel between Saint-Raphaël and Cannes. Following the Grande Corniche the road offers panoramas of the sea between Nice and Menton.

The capacity of this road varies from 2x2 to 2x4 lanes.

The road has heavy traffic all year round and is especially congested in July and August (in particular around Antibes and Nice. As a result, traffic-management schemes have been adopted between Var to Nice-West similar to those on the Péripherique in Paris. The autoroute is regularly closed on the Nice-Menton section as a result of rock falls onto the carriageways. The sections crossing the Maures and L'Esterel mountains are at risk from forest fires in summer.

This autoroute was opened in sections between 1961 to 1976.

I left Nice at 8h46 on this Sunday morning and arrived at Hôtel Azur in Cavalière at 18h00 after driving 176.6 km (planned was 150 km but I have done some extra driving due to in vain searching for CAZ_26 South of Saint-Tropez. In total I have photovisited 3 McDonald’s restaurants as well this day.

The highest temperature I experienced this day was 33° C near Gassin.

After my installation in the hotel I went to Le Lavandou for dinner and 2 space invaders. The day total was 189.9 km.

Hôtel Azur | Cavalière 11/06/2017 18h06

Around 18h00 I arrived at my final destination of this day. A steep road from sealevel (Boulevard des Acacias in Cavalière) to the hotel (elevation +62 within only 600 meters!) which was love at first sight. A hotel with rooms located in small pavilions, all with sea view and easy acces to the main building (photo) and swimming pool (at a higher level). I was happy to call this place home for two nights.

The D559 near Agay in between Anthéor and Saint-Raphaël. About 6 kilometers to Saint-Raphaël.

Saint-Raphaël

Saint-Raphaël is a commune in the Var department in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. Immediately to the west of Saint-Raphaël lies another, older, town called Fréjus, and together they form an urban agglomeration known as Fréjus Saint-Raphaël. The Var lies in the region called Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, often abbreviated to PACA.

Situated almost entirely on the Esterel Massif, the commune sits on soil of red porphyr, which makes for very picturesque scenes along the coast where the soil and rocks are exposed on cliff faces and rocky shores. Three important and spectacular rocks dominate the seascape: Cap Roux at 360 m, Saint-Pilon at 295 m, and the Rock of Saint-Barthélemy.
