A catch basin is an opening to the storm drain system that typically includes a grate or curb inlet at street level where storm water enters the catch basin and a sump captures sediment, debris and associated pollutants. Catch basins are able to prevent trash and other floatable materials from entering the drainage system by capturing such debris by way of a hooded outlet. It is very important for the community and environment to maintain catch basins.

I've complained about these storm drain catchbasins for years. They were recessed several inches and not marked. An unsuspecting cyclist could have lost control when their wheel suddenly dipped and then rebounded going through them. Now they are level, but the grates are too small for the inlets. This results in large gaps that parallel the direction of bike travel... and could result in a crash.
For scale, I've inserted my Ranger model Victorinox Swiss Army Knife into the gap. My knife is wider than road bike tires. If it can fall in, so could a bike wheel.
As I said, it's better, but still not safe.

This crewmember is working inside a catch basin beneath the Guide Meridian (State Route 539). A catch basin is simply the junction of two or more pipes. It's a location where we can get in and clean out the pipes and make repairs if necessary. The pipes transfer highway water runoff to retention ponds.

Workers put the final touches on a new curb being installed at the northeast corner of Stockton and Geary, where work to restore the sidewalk and a portion of the street is underway.

A hike through Alum Rock Park, the oldest municipal park in California. The park is quite beautiful- dry and hilly in parts, and lush around Penetencia Creek. It used to have mineral baths a century ago (it used to be the fad). The remnants are visible in various manmade catchbasins and these quaint stone arch bridges.

Old Baldy, or Mt. San Antonio. At more than 10,000 feet, it's the higthest mountain in the San Gabriel Range, which frames the north side of the Los Angeles basin. The mountain is rising as the pacific plate crunches against the North Amercian plate, along the San Andreas Fault, which runs on the far side of the mountains. Just as rapidly, the mountain is also coming down. Note the enormous catch basin for debris flows at the bottom of the ravine that runs up to the mountain. Before these catch basins, boulders would sometimes roll for miles across the alluvial plain.
Heavy duty municipal grade catch basins are installed flush with the asphalt surface. This troughs will handle high volumes of water. They are suitable for all ranges of traffic.
