Lemme just go ahead and tell this story. I almost never buy stuff anymore. I'm too busy trying to SELL stuff and I'm not really successful enough at that to feel like doing the disposable income thing very often. Usually everything I spend is on R&D-related stuff and so I talked myself into buying this for exactly that reason.

It's the original two-footswitch Catalinbread Galileo. The left side is a riff on the RunOffGroove, "May Queen" circuit that's supposed to emulate Brian May's Vox AC30 sound. On the right is a simplified version of the Catalinbread Naga Viper treble booster, modded to emulate Brian May's treble booster. They don't make this version any more. People were apparently confused by the controls, so they simplified it as a one-footswitch pedal, but I've really been curious about the version with the Vox tone stack and separate booster. I found this one used on Reverb and had to try it.

OK, first off, the booster section is really nice. I've never tried a Naga Viper, but now I want to try one. It manages a pretty righteous Rangemaster sound without resorting to germanium transistors in the process. Very mean and gritty. Me likey.

The Vox side is gainy as all getout. I mean, I understand that people are obsessed with gain these days, but a Vox isn't really a gainy amp. You can probably see here that I've got the Gain control turned all the way down and it's STILL distorting like mad. The manual says, "Go ahead and set the Gain at maximum and back off as much as you feel necessary (to compensate for hot pickups)." OK, I've been using my Junior with its humbucker. Maybe the gain won't be so egregious with single-coil pickups, but I was amazed at how distorted this was.

The voicing is really nice, though. It gets that kind of vowel-sound thing going that Vox amps seem to do sometimes. Like, the wah pedal was designed as a solid-state simulation of the Vox tone stack. It just happened to fall into devious hands with other plans. This has that odd Vox flavor, though. Just SO gainy.

Anyway, that's my testimony and you know it's true because I swore myself in on a 1959 RCA Receiving Tube Manual.

Here's that Sabbra Cadabra clone. Notice the finish kind of sucks. This was the first enclosure I did when I was trying out this new color. I know I'm pretty much always going to ruin the first one as I get comfortable with how a new powder works, so I do things first that I intend to keep for myself. I'm all, "April, this one's ugly, I've gotta keep it. Nobody would buy this!" Because I'm secretly about ten years old, except it's not really a secret.

Anyway, I dunno. Pedals that try to sound like someone's rig tend to have a pretty steep hill to climb. This is a JFET amp sim with a Rangemaster-style booster in front of it at a fixed boost volume, but you can turn the knob for the Rangemaster and adjust the width of the boost from very trebly to full-range. The wider the range of the boost, the more you're overdriving the amp sim. When you've got that nearly-full-range Iommi boost dialed-in it's pretty much a raging distortion machine. Of course, I was using my Junior. A Troika might be way less of a handful.

I ran into that same issue with the Catalinbread Galileo. It was just balls-out distortion even at the lowest settings with my Junior, but became a whole different animal with a Telematic. So maybe I'm just running too much signal into it, but I was kind of not into what it was doing. Which sucks, because I've had this PCB sitting around for ages waiting for the right JFETs to pop up and then ended up having to order them from Germany. Man, I can whine, can't I?

I need to go pull out a Troika. I've got everything stuffed away in nooks and crannies waiting for the Telematic shipment to show up and need a lot of floorspace or I'd have tried it already.

Here's a thing that's actually kind of humorous. This is my old Lowepro camera bag. No camera stuff to keep in it right now. Sold most of my expensive camera gear to get this company off the ground. BTW, I lived in Santa Rosa when I bought this bag and back when Lowepro was a local company. I'm told they've moved production out of the country now, so this is kind of a relic from my past. Still got mud on it from me rolling down the hill at Bernal Heights (I used to call it, "Venereal Heights"). Never could get the mud to come off.

Er, anyway...old man stories get sidetracked sometimes. Heh...I've been putting my home-built, "keepers" in here and planning a new pedalboard...eventually.

The yellow one at the back on the right is an MXR Distortion+ with an OPA2134 opamp, which was a really good mod. Thank you, Lionel. To its left is an Expandora built with old-school cans. The green one all the way to the left is a Brassmaster clone. In the middle is a CE-2 chorus clone. The black pedal is a clone of a Demeter Compulator. The blue on this side is a Mutron III clone and finally the black one on this side is a Rat clone using a vintage Motorola opamp.

The gold pedal all the way to the right is one of the old 2-footswitch Catalinbread Galileo pedals, not something I built.

Not sure how I accumulated this many, "keepers."

Or is it the King of the Cats?

Eh, as much as I wanted to sit around and feel sorry for myself, I really wanted to finish up this build. It was almost done and I figured I'd have a hard time screwing it up, even though I'm not feeling great today.

This is a clone of a Catalinbread Katzenkönig pedal. I'd wanted to build it because it's another take on a Rat pedal. In this case, they said they were trying to build a pedal that's a Rat with the first stage of a Tonebender in front of it.

That's pretty much exactly what it sounds like, too. I still don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing. It doesn't get very clean. Although it can get REALLY dirty. Like a fuzz pedal pumped into a Rat pedal, interestingly enough.

I dunno. It's kind of cool. Kind of.

catalinbread sft clone. killer distortion for bass, I really like the eq controls on this pedal.

I'm really proud of this build. xicon metal film resistors, topmay box capacitors, xicon electrolytics, alpha pots, neutrik jacks. Cliff 125b enclosure.

I got the board in the main at around noon and finished the pedal by 3:30 because I was leaving for tour. Sounds killer!

I've been participating in a few forum threads about overdrive pedals. Everybody has their own opinion about what sounds the most rockin'...... My fave is the Catalinbread DLS. It will pretty much make almost any tube amp sound like a big pile of Marshall's.

It goes -

Wah into RC booster into loop 1

Loop 1 - TS (with the associated suckage)

Loop 2 - BB Preamp and Brown Rabbit

Loop 3 - BoR, BoM and DLS

Loop 4 - DMM, MXR Phase90, Catalinbread Trem and Serrano Picoso

Just like the Galileo, this pedal changed completely with the right kind of guitar plugged into it. Catalinbread really designed these circuits to be used like the original signal chain. Plug in your Red Special or your SG with P-90s and repeat after me...

Set up to sit in with Spirits, but the engineers couldn't get it together and I never got to hit.

I've actually listed this one. Just too much oscillator for me. I'm apparently just not a flanging kind of guy. Although, I would like to try the Catalinbread Zero Point. I think that might be much more my style.

The latest edition to my growing collection. Digital pedal voiced to simulate an analog tape echo box.

Strymon. Darkglass. Greenhouse.

This is the AionFX layout of the Catalinbread silicon "Karma Suture", which has it's roots in the Interfax "Harmonic Percolator". Unlike the original, which was all out industrial fuzz, this version is capable of some unique overdrive sounds as well.

I built this pedal in 3.5 hours. Total rush job right before I left for tour. I will do graphics when I get home.

My new Skreddy Pedals Hybrid Fuzz Driver showed up today. Man, that is one amazing pedal. I hesitate to even call it a, "fuzz" pedal. It really kind of straddles the overdrive/fuzz line at a lot of settings. A lot of fuzz pedals don't behave well with humbuckers and I almost always play guitars with humbuckers, so this is kind of a big deal for me. I've wanted one for ages and it's everything I'd hoped it would be.

It's not a very involved board, but it does the things I want to hear.

I think eventually I'd like to put a Catalinbread Talisman pedal back behind the Heptode. Other than that, I'm pretty happy with my little Boss board.

Demeter Opto Compulator, Skreddy Hybrid Fuzz Driver, Retrosonic Distortion, Catalinbread Zero Point, Heptode Virtuoso.
