Mumadona, condesa gallega, mandó construir en este lugar, en torno al año 968, un castillo donde la población se pudiese refugiar de los constantes asaltos de las hordas de vikingos, venidos de los mares del norte de Europa, así como de los musulmanes provenientes de los territorios ocupados por ellos al sur.
Mumadona, a Galician countess, ordered the construction of a castle in this place, around the year 968, where the population could take refuge from the constant assaults of the hordes of Vikings, coming from the seas of northern Europe, as well as Muslims from of the territories occupied by them to the south.

Castelo de Soutomaior está situado nun lugar verdadeiramente privilexiado pola ampla paisaxe que dende alí se divisa, a uns 119 metros sobre o nivel do mar, dominando o territorio enmarcado polo val do río Verdugo, dende a súa confluencia co Oitavén ata a súa desembocadura na enseada de San Simón, en Arcade.
Colocado no centro xeográfico do municipio do mesmo nome, dista uns seis kilómetros por carretera da costa marítima e un kilómetro e medio en liña recta do río Verdugo.

Aqui acredito que é um lugar especial que une no mesmo instante essas duas sensações. A da história sob nossos pés que resite aos séculos, e o presente, voando nas nuvens.

Here I believe it is a special place that unites these two sensations at the same time. The history under our feet that resists the centuries, and the present, flying in the transition of day to night.

Su nombre, literalmente significa castillo blanco.

Guimarães, Portugal
The Castle of Guimarães (Portuguese: Castelo de Guimarães), is the principal medieval castle in the municipality Guimarães, in the northern region of Portugal. It was built under the orders of Mumadona Dias in the 10th century to defend the monastery from attacks by Moors and Norsemen.
The castle is a military fortification grounded primarily in the late Romanesque period, and elaborated during the early Gothic epoch of Portuguese architecture. Its area is delineated by walls forming a pentagram, similar to a shield, that includes eight rectangular towers, military square and central keep. Originating in the foundations of a Roman structure, from the writings of Alfredo Guimarães, it was later elaborated on the French model, in its current the form of a shield, with reduced central yard and difficult accesses. It includes several Gothic characteristics, owing to its remodelling at the end of the 13th century, when the keep and residences were constructed (possibly over pre-existing structures).
