This view of 12,093’ (3658m) Carter Mountain was taken at sunset from the Half Moon Oil Field south of Cody, Wyoming. The mountain is composed of andesite flows and flow breccias, andesitic volcaniclastic rocks with minor volcanic tuffs. These rocks belong to the Absaroka Volcanics Supergroup which are the remnant of a volcanic field that was active in the Eocene between 53 and 43 million years ago.
One of Appalachia's most interesting coal-loading operations is United Coal Company's Carter Roag mine. Located in Randolph County West Virginia, trains to the mine require movement on a Class I, a Regional, and a Shortline to get to the loadout. CSX takes the trains to Grafton, where the Appalchian and Ohio takes over for the southward journey down the vast network of ex-B&O coal branches until they reach Alexander, WV. At Alexander, the cars go in 20-car increments to Carter Roag via the Beech Mountain Railroad. Catching a mine run for Carter Roag is a rare treat, whether on the A&O or on the Beech Mountain side. The empty trains typically run out of Grafton in the cover of darkness, so we lucked out to have a chance to shoot the southbound run on a sunny winter afternoon. Operating as CSX foreign road symbol Z81315, the empty train for Carter Roag passes the former B&O CPLs at Berryburg Junction with four Geeps and 80 empty coal gons in tow.

20142 Sir John Betjeman brings up the rear of train 746, 08.20 Ruislip Depot - Amersham empty stock move, pictured approaching Northwood station on the Metropolitan Line.
Metropolitan Railway electric loco 12 Sarah Siddons is hauling the train, which is formed of ex-LMS directors saloon 45029 Florence Nightingale and the London Transport-liveried ex-BR 4TC unit. The photo was taken from Highfield Road overbridge.
On Friday 24th, Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th July the London Transport Museum ran a series of heritage trains from Amersham, using this formation (train 746, referred to as the "Sarah Siddons Train") as well as its four-car set of 1938 Tube Stock (train 747). The London Underground traffic notice referred to the special trains as the "Electrification of the Railways" event, but there was no mention of this name in the London Transport Museum publicity.
On the Friday, the "Sarah Siddons Train" ran two return trips from Amersham to Harrow-on-the-Hill; on the Saturday, it ran return six trips from Amersham to Watford and the 1938 Tube Stock ran five; on the Sunday, there were nine return trips to Harrow-on-the-Hill, five with 20142 and Sarah Siddons and four with the 1938TS. On all three days the trains ran empty from Ruislip Depot in the morning (reversing in the siding at Harrow-on-the-Hill), but on the way back to Ruislip Depot in the evening they carried passengers as far as Harrow-on-the-Hill (where they reversed at platform 6) and then ran empty.
This was the first of the two empty stock workings on the Saturday morning, the 1938TS being half an hour behind. Strangely, although there were several people here to photograph this, they all departed fairly quickly and I was alone for the 1938TS - but the sun went behind a slow-moving cloud not long before it arrived. After that, there were no more clouds around until about 3pm.

Another shot of Carter-Shields Cabin in Cades Cove Tennessee.
Robert Shields moved his family into Cades Cove in the early 1820s to avoid a typhoid epidemic at Chilhowee. He established one of the earliest Cove tub mills and sponsored early Cove industries of forging and milling in partnership with D.D. Foute and “Fighting Billie” Tipton. He was active in the Baptist Church and served as Justice of the Peace and member of the County Court.

Carter Falls on the Paradise River in Mt. Rainier National Park. At only 53 feet tall (16 meters), this pretty little waterfall was named after guide Henry Carter in the late 1800's. Henry Carter built the first trail to Paradise Valley on Mt. Rainier.
Swansea High Street. I think the street art is by Rick Bennett and reflects the fact that this, now run down area, was once home to a number of busy pubs, dance halls and clubs. January 2020
