Returning from Railfair in Sacramento, Union Pacific 8444 and 3985 power a steam special on WP rails, crossing the Humboldt River about 10 miles east of Elko at Tonka, Nevada.

Catching a GP40-2 leading an SP through freight on the main in Nevada was rare in 1990. No doubt Doug knew this, and set up for a portrait just west of the crew change in Carlin, Nevada.
There is a good possibility this was Doug's train west from Ogden.

Carlin, Nevada is a former railroad town. Specifically, a Southern Pacific railroad town as it was a crew change point and featured a yard and accommodations for resting train crews.
The Western Pacific all but bypassed Carlin, located on the southern edge of town, and choosing Elko as a crew change point, 25 miles to the west. SP and WP had a paired track agreement through this region of Nevada. The SP dispatched westbound trains, while WP (later UP), eastbound trains.
SSW 9647 on the RORVM awaits an outbound crew while Union Pacific's NPMIA pulls through the SP yard on its way west to Elko.
Rock formation in the Lomond Hills, Fife. Apparently this is a witch that annoyed the devil and got petrified by a lightning strike. True story.

Tu m'hai veduto nascere, indulgesti
ai sogni del fanciullo trasognato:
tutto me stesso, tutto il mio passato,
i miei ricordi più teneri e mesti
dormono in te, sepolti come vesti
sepolte in un armadio canforato.
