Carlin's miner is an early-season pollinator of the wildflowers here at Lake Meyer Park and other area woodlands since they are more tolerant of cold weather than other types of wild bees and thus serve as superior pollinators now. The male on top here is smaller and grayer than the female that has a thick furry pale tan thorax. Their abdomens are pure black. After mating, the female will dig a tunnel, or mine, down into some soft forest soil on a sunny slope and lay her her eggs there in separate chambers on a pollen ball placed to provide food for the larvae after hatching.
Larvae pupate in the summer and overwinter in the nest to emerge now in April.

Catching a GP40-2 leading an SP through freight on the main in Nevada was rare in 1990. No doubt Doug knew this, and set up for a portrait just west of the crew change in Carlin, Nevada.
There is a good possibility this was Doug's train west from Ogden.
Rock formation in the Lomond Hills, Fife. Apparently this is a witch that annoyed the devil and got petrified by a lightning strike. True story.
A pair of Dash-8s, the leading one pleading for some personal hygiene, and the trailing one still in C&NW paint, wheel an eastbound Z-train through Carlin, Nevada. May 1999.
Tu m'hai veduto nascere, indulgesti
ai sogni del fanciullo trasognato:
tutto me stesso, tutto il mio passato,
i miei ricordi più teneri e mesti
dormono in te, sepolti come vesti
sepolte in un armadio canforato.
