A place in the port of Montevideo

An empty Tara train, having discharged the zinc ore in Dublin Port heads back up towards North Wall freight yard assisted by a flagman over the busy Alexandra Road who manually controlled the traffic lights over the East Wall Road & back into the rail yard.

The very colourful Maria Grazia Onorato, currently on charter to CLdN from Moby/ Tirrenia operating in from Rotterdam to Dublin assisted by Dublin Port tug Shackleton.

Maria Grazia Onorato was built by German shiupbuilder Flensburger around the same time as the Irish Ferries WB Yeats.

On the side of the ship reads "Onorato per i marittimi italiani " which translates "Honored for Italian seafarers". The Onorato shipping company which owns Maria Grazia Onorato hires only Italian seafarers, and lobbies against competitors using non-EU labor to drive prices down.

As a follow-up to what I posted yesterday and the day before, I focused on the people traveling with me on the Denick II two days ago, and on the scenery along the canal from Ghent to Terneuzen yesterday.

Today, something different — a quiet study of light and shadow. In the late afternoon, the sun slipped low over the water, casting the railing’s sharp lines across the deck while the river shimmered below. Just one of those small details you only notice when you take the time to look.

The new power at Dublin Port, Seatruck are now top dog at the port, ousting P & O down to one berth down the river, literally.

All change at Dublin Port with Seatruck Ferries ( now part of CLdN / Cobelfret ) switching terminals with P & O Ferries.

P & O ferries now down to just 2 ships from 4, are pushed down to Seatrucks old terminal 5, while Seatruck now move to T3, now remaned to T4 including new berths.

Last weekend, we took the Denick II on a guided boat trip through the Port of Ghent — and discovered just how impressive this inland harbor really is. Part of North Sea Port, it spans 32 kilometers from Ghent to Terneuzen, connecting Flanders directly to the North Sea and handling over 66 million tons of cargo annually.

The tour was very well organized, and the guide's facts and figures about ships, cranes, and trade were genuinely fascinating. I enjoyed both the stories and the atmosphere — capturing photos of people and the scenery as we went along.

Tomorrow, I'll share a few more photos from the area.

The trip aboard the Denick II — a small passenger vessel operated by Rederij Denick for guided tours and harbor cruises — offered a rare opportunity to see the Port of Ghent and its connection to the North Sea from a completely different angle: from the water itself.

The Ghent–Terneuzen Canal stretches for about 32 kilometers, allowing seagoing ships up to 265 meters in length to travel deep inland. Together with the ports of Terneuzen and Vlissingen, it forms North Sea Port, one of Europe's busiest inland ports, handling more than 66 million tons of cargo annually.

As the Denick II made its way north, the landscape began to change. The dense industrial skyline of Ghent's harbor gradually gave way to open skies and farmland as we crossed into the Netherlands. Cranes and pipelines were replaced by fields, dikes, and wind turbines.

At Terneuzen, the canal opens into the Western Scheldt through a system of locks — a key link to the open sea. The new Terneuzen Lock, inaugurated in 2024, allows vessels up to 366 meters long to reach Ghent, though the canal itself limits their draught to about 12.5 meters. Even so, it marks a major step in keeping this waterway open to larger ocean-going ships and reinforces the region's role as a vital maritime gateway between Flanders and the North Sea.

Choosing door-to-door cargo services involves excellent benefits. Here is everything you need to understand about door-to-door delivery services.

Faster Freight provides you with cargo insurance to provide maximum protection to your freight! All carriers are required by law to have liability coverage. This liability coverage will cover a certain amount of the cargo’s value and will protect the carrier in the case that a shipment goes awry.

In an over simplification, it sidesteps all other parties and becomes directly responsible for the cargo. If it’s damaged or stolen, all you need to do is provide sufficient evidence and your claim will be processed. One of the huge benefits of cargo shipping insurance is it does not rely on the carrier being ‘guilty’ of any wrongdoing.

All you need to do is tell us about your insurance needs and we will get it done for you.

Buenos Aires, Argentina: A colossal Hamburg Süd container vessel dominates the frame as it maneuvers through the grey, choppy waters of the Río de la Plata. The ship’s vibrant red hull stands in stark contrast to the overcast, muted sky above, creating a somber yet industrial atmosphere. A small, sturdy tugboat nestles against the massive freighter’s flank, highlighting the significant scale difference between the ocean-going giant and its local support craft. The intricate lattice of the ship's superstructure and the dense arrangement of multicolored containers reveal the complex logistics of international maritime trade. Wisps of smoke drift from the funnel, hinting at the powerful engines driving the vessel toward its next global destination. The flat lighting of the day enhances the utilitarian textures of the steel, while the calm but expansive river surface emphasizes the ship's steady progress. This scene captures the quiet rhythm of a bustling port city where global commerce meets the everyday transit of local commuters and cargo. By observing these industrial giants, one gains a deeper appreciation for the intricate maritime arteries that sustain regional economies and global supply chains. The interplay between the weathered river and the man-made vessel serves as a poignant reminder of the enduring connection between urban centers and their surrounding waters. Bahía Azul, Magallanes: A group of travelers stands on the deck of a ferry, looking toward the concrete ramp as a transport truck prepares to disembark. The bright, crisp light of the southern hemisphere illuminates the deep blue waters of the Strait of Magellan, casting clear shadows against the rugged, windswept coastline in the distance. Samuel Jeffery, positioned prominently in the foreground with a backpack, observes the maritime transition while others nearby capture the moment on their mobile devices. The scene is defined by a sense of anticipation and the raw, utilitarian beauty of regional transit infrastructure connecting the remote reaches of Patagonia. The composition utilizes a deep depth of field to draw the viewer’s eye from the immediate crowd toward the industrial vehicles waiting on the shore. This border-crossing point serves as a vital artery for logistics and tourism, bridging the gap between isolated settlements and the vast wilderness beyond. Each traveler remains immersed in the collective experience of crossing, reflecting the transient nature of life on the road in one of the world's southernmost regions. The stark contrast between the modern maritime vessel and the barren, rocky terrain underscores the logistical challenges inherent in sub-Antarctic exploration. This image is a collaborative production by Samuel Jeffery and Audrey Bergner for Project 23.

Montevideo, Uruguay: The bustling port and historic heart of the city stretch out under a brilliant, cloudless sky. Massive yellow cranes stand as sentinels over the Rio de la Plata, where cargo ships wait to navigate the busy shipping lanes. Below the cranes, the urban landscape reveals a dense grid of traditional architecture punctuated by white, sun-drenched rooftops. The sharp contrast between the industrial machinery and the weathered stone textures of the old town buildings captures the city’s dual identity as a maritime hub and a cultural capital. Shadows carve intricate geometric patterns across the dense cityscape during the golden midday light. This aerial perspective highlights the strategic importance of the harbor, which has long served as a gateway for trade in the Southern Cone. One can observe the seamless integration of modern logistics and historical preservation within this vibrant South American metropolis. The composition utilizes a wide angle to encompass both the vastness of the water and the intricate details of the urban sprawl below. Each building reflects a chapter of regional history, while the active port signals the constant movement of global commerce. This vantage point provides an essential look at how Montevideo balances its rich heritage with the demands of an evolving coastal economy. This image is a collaborative production by Samuel Jeffery and Audrey Bergner for Samuel and Audrey.
