The most beautiful river of the Netherlands "De Ijssel"

A fully rigged three-master that once served as a cargo ship on the old "Zuyder sea", now IJssel Lake, and the Wadden Sea.

This type of ship , a so called "Tjalk", was designed to sail through shallow waters and therefore a keel is missing at the bottom of such ships.

A keel ensures that a sailing ship cannot drift away sideways and for that reason the "swords" were made on both sides of these ships that could be lowered up or down. The effect is the same as a keel.

The antique cargo and fishing boats still in service are floating museum pieces and are cherised by their owners....

This old cargo ship is a so called "Tjalk", a ship type dated from the 17th century.

This ship type has a round bow and is relatively narrow with a small shallow draft, because they were used to navigate the shallow water of the former Dutch "Zuiderzee" and the Wadden sea.

Because of this shallow it was not possible to use a ship's keel and to prevent the ship from drifting, the so called "swords" were placed on bothsides amidships that could be lowered into the water.

The ropes on the sides of the mainsail and jib serve to visualize the airflow on the sails.

These ships are in principle sailing museum pieces.

Every year "the skûtsjes" keep the Dutch province of Friesland under spell. Every respected town or city takes part in this saiing competition.

Skûtsjesilen is synonymous with racing sailing with old cargo ships, flat bottomed boats at the turn of the last century to bring peat, manure, soil and other cargo to the farms.

As a result, the ships had to sail through shallow waters and were therefor built long and flat with movable swords on either side of the ships.

Lowering the swords into the water prevented the ships from drifting sideways.

During windy days, very high speeds achieved in this race and it can sometimes be hard.

To sail well with such a ship, a trained crew and great helmanship are rtequired....

The Honduran-registered “Zhen-feng” (振豐號) cargo ship fell into trouble in the night of Oct. 10, 2018 near to the Zhuwei Fishing Harbor (竹圍漁港), and all 12 crew were successfully rescued by the helicopter. Recently this location become an interesting and hot spot for young people and photographers who like to visit and take photo over there. Because of the stranded ship will be pulled away or dismantled in the end of this year.

Big thanks for your stopping by and taking the time to view this image. Wishing you a nice day/night wherever you are!

The Cap San Diego was restored mainly by the labour of enthusiasts and laid-off dock workers, and is kept operational to date. Most of the time, the Cap San Diego is moored at the port of Hamburg where visitors can access virtually all areas of the ship from the bridge to the engine.

Another fantastic ramble along the coast path, with the added bonus of an excellent tea room at the end, unknown to me, the tea room was closed due to CVD-19

The sun is now almost over the horizon and its golden glow is quite warming still on this late March evening. The light was the feature that attracted me to this shot. The shadows lengthen as the ship moves out to sea.
