Drummers tune their tambors by heating them near fires lit in the streets of Montevideo prior to the parade of Llamadas. One of the most imporant elements of Carnaval in Uruguay is Candombe, an African drum rhythm played on tambor drums. It was revitalized in the Americas by black slave descendents as a way by which to reclaim their cultural heritage and battle for civil rights.

Candombe do Acude, de Dona Meces, a matriarca, e sua familia, na Serra do Cipo. O candombe e a expressao catolica sincretista da comunidade do Acude, que foi criada na epoca da escravidao no entorno da fazendo Cipo Velho, ha 100 kms de Belo Horizonte. As caixas de percussao que comandam o Candombe apos a reza, e que se chamam "tambus", foram confeccionadas por antigos moradores no final do seculo XIX e inÃcio do século XX, completando 200 anos em 2015.

Candombe has had a significant role in the culture of Uruguay in the last two hundred years, it was recognized by UNESCO as a World Cultural Heritage of humanity. It is a cultural manifestation originating with slaves from Africa.

America, Latino America, South America, Uruguay, Montevideo. Candombe was declared intangible cultural expressions by Unesco in 2009. Candombe is played all the year in Montevideo. In the different neighborhoods of the city groups of comparsas used to meeting to play. Each comparsa is formed by at last fifty percussionists and a body of dancers. The Candombe is a rhythm that born in Uruguay as a legacy of the Afro community. December 3 was recognized as National Day of the Candombe, the Uruguayan Afro Culture and the Racial Equity.
