** I took this shot during a very pleasant boat ride from Cassis in September 2018, it took us into a number of the Calanques . Seen from the small boat these limestone cliffs were very impressive.
Between the city of Marseilles and the town of Cassis is the Massif des Calanques national Park that was created in 2012 it contains some beautiful coastal landscapes .
A calanque is a narrow, steep-walled inlet that is developed in limestone, dolomite, or other carbonate strata and found along the Mediterranean coast. They are almost like mini fiords and are very spectacular. You can visit them either from the land or by boat.

On our last day of the trip we had a free day, which we decided to forgo the bikes and go for a hikes of the Calannques. It was a great day as the calanques are truly amazing. You can see some adventurous souls climbing some of the calanques.

The calanques (fjord-like bays) in the Cassis are particularly spectacular. Frequently a fog moves from the sea towards the mainland. Together with the sunlight in the late afternoon it is a spectacular scenery. Cassis, France.

La calanque de Sugiton avec son célèbre îlot nommé le Torpilleur, en raison de sa forme aux accents militaires.
Au premier plan, la Pointe de l'Ilot puis les falaises du Devanson et le Cap Morgiou. Au fond, à gauche l'ile Plane (Calsereigne) et à droite l''ile Jarre.
Creusées dans un calcaire résistant ou dans la roche granitique, les calanques composent de nombreux paysages des côtes méditerranéennes. Leur forme rappelle celle des rias, des abers bretons ou des fjords.
Pour les calanques de Provence, la mer a exploité des failles géologiques dans la roche calcaire, conférant au littoral un profil très découpé.
Le Parc national des Calanques est le seul parc national périurbain en Europe à la fois terrestre et marin.
Situé au coeur de la métropole Aix-Marseille-Provence, ce monument naturel comprend des massifs littoraux découpés de calanques, ainsi qu’un vaste espace marin qui, avec le canyon de la Cassidaigne, inclut l’un des plus riches canyons sous-marins de Méditerranée en matière de biodiversité.
Il comporte également plusieurs îles, à la fois refuges de biodiversité et porteuses de trésors patrimoniaux.
Situés dans l’une des zones les plus arides et ventées de France, les paysages spectaculaires des espaces terrestres et marins abritent de nombreuses espèces patrimoniales littorales et continentales.
Les calanques offrent une biodiversité remarquable avec 140 espèces terrestres animales et végétales protégées, 60 espèces marines patrimoniales et un patrimoine culturel d’une très grande richesse, tel que le château d’If.
Une calanque est une formation géologique particulière se présentant sous forme d'un vallon étroit et profond à bords escarpés, en partie submergé par la mer. On les trouve sous cette forme autour de la Méditerranée, et sous ce nom dans le Sud-Est de la France.
