Quite a stand out feature in the cactus gardens.

Cacti in the Majorelle Garden just outside Marrakesh. Majorelle was a watercolorist, but these gardens are his creative masterpiece. The garden has been open to the public since 1947. In 1980 the garden was owned by Yves Saint-Laurent and Pierre Berge. After the death of Yves Saint Laurent in 2008, his ashes were scattered in the garden, where there is a commemorative memorial dedicated to him. There is a tiny bit of the museum painted in Majorelle Blue in this picture.

To scare off intruders, I wonder?

These folks have replaced the traditional barking dog with ‘guard cacti’. Really who says cacti in everyday speak? The fence is only in the front of the property and does not extend around the side. Obviously there are plans for more cactus plants in the future. I think there should be a sign saying, “Beware of Cacti. Get the point? You could be stuck until the police arrive.” As Robin would say, “Holy prickly situation, Batman.”

After many days of cool and rain, it warmed and the sun appeared. I moved many of my cactus out from their winter quarters.

Tall growing Cacti with ribbed stem and short barely visible spines. It is a member of the plant family Cactaceae. Cacti occur in a wide range of shapes and sizes. Most cacti live in habitats subject to at least some drought. Many live in extremely dry environments, even being found in the Atacama Desert, one of the driest places on earth. Cacti show many adaptations to conserve water. Almost all cacti are succulents, meaning they have thickened, fleshy parts adapted to store water. Unlike many other succulents, the stem is the only part of most cacti where this vital process takes place. Most species of cacti have lost true leaves, retaining only spines, which are highly modified leaves. As well as defending against herbivores, spines help prevent water loss by reducing air flow close to the cactus and providing some shade. In the absence of leaves, enlarged stems carry out photosynthesis. Cacti are native to the Americas, ranging from Patagonia in the south to parts of western Canada in the north. Cacti have a variety of uses: many species are used as ornamental plants, others are grown for fodder or forage, and others for food (particularly their fruit). 24864

Cacti in Botanic garden of Vienna

There is a new exhibition at the orangery of the nearby park where I go at least once every week. The theme are indoor plants and IMHO it's not very interesting but I like this cacti display.

While visiting my sister in Victoria, Texas April 2021 we did some touring of wineries that were close by. Along the way we stopped on the roadside when we saw a potential photo shoot. The wineries of course had their own scenic landscapes with the grape vines and the river close by. In winter the glass houses at our zoo are a great place to escape the cold for a moment. I also like to see the huge cacti which are quite impressive for someone who only knows the small ones which you grow on the windowsill. :)

Campagna intorno a Seggiano (Grosseto) - Countryside near Seggiano (Grosseto)

Located about 60 Km. far from the provincial capital Grosseto, Seggiano is placed on the Mount Amiata being one of the last hilly north-western offshoots.

The village was built at the beginning of the tenth century as a possession of the Abbey of San Salvatore al Monte Amiata, which after the year one thousand yielded a portion of the rights to the Abbey of Sant'Antimo. The Sienese dominion began in the second half of the thirteenth century, during which exerted strong influences the families of Salimbeni until the fourteenth and the fifteenth century and the Ugurgieri onwards. The village remained in the domination area of the Republic of Siena until 1555, when it became part of the Tuscany Grand Duchy and followed its fate from that moment on.

Mostly Organ Pipe Cacti with a few Saguaro punctuate the rocky landscape of Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument in southern Arizona.

I just loved the contrast of these furry cacti against the hard surface of the core 10 steel bakdrop.
