Cacti in the Majorelle Garden just outside Marrakesh. Majorelle was a watercolorist, but these gardens are his creative masterpiece. The garden has been open to the public since 1947. In 1980 the garden was owned by Yves Saint-Laurent and Pierre Berge. After the death of Yves Saint Laurent in 2008, his ashes were scattered in the garden, where there is a commemorative memorial dedicated to him. There is a tiny bit of the museum painted in Majorelle Blue in this picture.
Love this garden and the cacti growing there. Majorelle Garden, part of the former residence of French artist, Louis Majorelle, beautifully renovated by the late couturier Yves St. Laurent. Located close to Marrakesh, Morocco.
Not sure what type of Cacti these are, but they really stood out amongst the rest. Just finished flowering I suspect.
These folks have replaced the traditional barking dog with ‘guard cacti’. Really who says cacti in everyday speak? The fence is only in the front of the property and does not extend around the side. Obviously there are plans for more cactus plants in the future. I think there should be a sign saying, “Beware of Cacti. Get the point? You could be stuck until the police arrive.” As Robin would say, “Holy prickly situation, Batman.”
After Gila Woodpeckers abandon their nests inside saguaro cacti, European Starlings usually move in. This guy was a real chatter box.
Tall growing Cacti with ribbed stem and short barely visible spines. It is a member of the plant family Cactaceae. Cacti occur in a wide range of shapes and sizes. Most cacti live in habitats subject to at least some drought. Many live in extremely dry environments, even being found in the Atacama Desert, one of the driest places on earth. Cacti show many adaptations to conserve water. Almost all cacti are succulents, meaning they have thickened, fleshy parts adapted to store water. Unlike many other succulents, the stem is the only part of most cacti where this vital process takes place. Most species of cacti have lost true leaves, retaining only spines, which are highly modified leaves. As well as defending against herbivores, spines help prevent water loss by reducing air flow close to the cactus and providing some shade. In the absence of leaves, enlarged stems carry out photosynthesis. Cacti are native to the Americas, ranging from Patagonia in the south to parts of western Canada in the north. Cacti have a variety of uses: many species are used as ornamental plants, others are grown for fodder or forage, and others for food (particularly their fruit). 24864
These are some quite impressive cacti in the greenhouses at our zoo and botanical garden. Some of them are more than 100 years old.
There is a new exhibition at the orangery of the nearby park where I go at least once every week. The theme are indoor plants and IMHO it's not very interesting but I like this cacti display.
While visiting my sister in Victoria, Texas April 2021 we did some touring of wineries that were close by. Along the way we stopped on the roadside when we saw a potential photo shoot. The wineries of course had their own scenic landscapes with the grape vines and the river close by. In winter the glass houses at our zoo are a great place to escape the cold for a moment. I also like to see the huge cacti which are quite impressive for someone who only knows the small ones which you grow on the windowsill. :)
