This beautiful nine-arch bridge over the River Barrow in the village of Leighlinbridge, Co. Carlow, which was named after it, is among the oldest surviving in Ireland. It could also be deemed Ireland's first toll bridge; in the 14th century the Kavanaghs dominated the local area, and the Crown had to pay 'black rent' to keep the bridge open.
The site has been an important river crossing for over a thousand years. The first stone bridge was built c1319 Canon Jakas of Kildare Cathedral. It was widened in 1768 and a cantilever path attached in 1976.
