Begun in 1030 under Conrad II, with the east end and high vault of 1090-1103, the imposing triple-aisled vaulted basilica of red sandstone is the "culmination of a design which was extremely influential in the subsequent development of Romanesque architecture during the 11th and 12th centuries". As the burial site for Salian, Staufer and Habsburg emperors and kings the cathedral is regarded as a symbol of imperial power. With the Abbey of Cluny in ruins, it remains the largest Romanesque church. It is considered to be "a turning point in European architecture", one of the most important architectural monuments of its time and one of the finest Romanesque monuments.
In 1981, the cathedral was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List of culturally important sites as "a major monument of Romanesque art in the German Empire".

Although the original church was founded in the 11th century, the present baroque structure dates from its rebuilding in 1753 following damage sustained during the Austrian bombardment of 1749. The brick bell tower, or campanile, is one of the oldest left in Venice, probably dating from the 12th century.

The painted-snipe is not related to the true snipes and differs from them in habits, flight and appearance, being far more colorful and having longer legs than the snipes. It is unusual in that the female is larger and more brightly colored than the male, with the sides of the head, neck and throat a rich chestnut brown, and a distinct black band across the breast; the male is paler and greyer.
Mostly in the animal kingdom the males are more beautiful than the females. There are exceptions of course, like in humans, where females are far more beautiful than males. This bird is also an exception. The female is more colourful. I saw a female as well, but couldn't get her well on the photo.

The eclectus parrot (Eclectus roratus) is a parrot native to the Solomon Islands, Sumba, New Guinea and nearby islands, northeastern Australia, and the Maluku Islands (Moluccas).
There is a huge difference in appearance between the male and the female. The male has a mostly bright green plumage and the female a mostly bright red and purple/blue plumage.
It was first thought that they were of two distinct species.

North Queensferry is a village in Fife, Scotland, on the Firth of Forth, between the Forth Bridge and the Forth Road Bridge, and 10 miles (16.1 km) from Edinburgh.
Nowadays especially known, because of the beautiful Forth bridge. The bridge was designed by Sir John Fowler and opened in 1890.

Krujë. In the background the fortress. Kruje has Ottoman style influences seen in the alley with the old bazaar. Krujas old bazaar is well preserved, and is a very photogenic place, attracting quite some tourists. Nowadays it houses mainly souvenir shops with traditional Albanian costumes, musical instruments, old books and memorabilia from the Communist days.

Lübeck - the former capital and Queen City of the Hanseatic League - was founded in the 12th century and prospered until the 16th century as the major trading centre for northern Europe. It has remained a centre for maritime commerce to this day, particularly with the Nordic countries. Despite the damage it suffered during the Second World War, the basic structure of the old city, consisting mainly of 15th- and 16th-century patrician residences, public monuments (the famous Holstentor brick gate), churches and salt storehouses, remains unaltered.
Lübeck is the second largest city in Schleswig-Holstein, in northern Germany, and one of the major ports of Germany.Because of its Brick Gothic architectural heritage it was placed on UNESCO's list of World Heritage Sites in 2009.

Story behind the photo: So there I was, on a mundane school run, when I spotted this lone tree standing on the ridge of an old abandoned quarry. There was quite something about that tree that caught my eye. Maybe it was the fact that it was standing there all alone, like some kind of rebel without a cause. And let me tell you, it was the most exciting thing to happen to me all week.
I began visualising this tree silhouetted against the evening colors of the sky. I mean, why bother with actually paying attention to my surroundings when I can just imagine everything looking much better in my head? And so, I decided to plan a future photo shoot using the Photopills app.
On the day of the shoot, I had to do a bit of hiking up the quarry’s ridge, traipsing through the wilderness like the true adventurer that I am. (Okay, fine, it was more like a gentle stroll over a knoll in the park. But let's not quibble over details.) Once I got there, I faffed around a bit to get a satisfactory composition. I mean, it's not like I was in any rush or anything. Who needs to get the shot quickly when you can just take your sweet time?
The making of the photo involved getting down low on my belly to get the shot just right. I mean, it's not like I have any shame or anything. Who cares if people are staring at me lying flat on my belly in a public place? It's all about getting the shot.
Now, the sunset wasn't exactly what I would call impressive. But hey, it's not like I had any control over that. I'm just happy that I managed to get a shot that was at least halfway decent. And who knows, maybe one day it'll end up in someone’s home or perhaps a fancy art gallery or something. After all, mediocrity is the new excellence, isn't it?
