Another name often used to describe the Loggerhead Shrike a predatory songbird that frequently impales its food items on long thorns.

As always, thank you so much for stopping by and for leaving any comments or faves, they are very much appreciated.

Ponte Vecchio (Old Bridge) in Florence over the Arno river. Butchers have been excluded from trading there since 1595, a decision originally taken to enhance the prestige of the bridge!

Red-backed shrike (male) / Rusi svračak / Lanius collurio

This 16–18 cm (approx. 6.3–7.1 inches) long migratory bird eats large insects, small birds, frogs, rodents and lizards. Like other shrikes it hunts from prominent perches, and impales corpses on thorns or barbed wire as a "larder." This practice has earned it the nickname of "butcher bird." (Wikipedia)

Thanks to everyone for your visiting, favs & comments :).

Butchers reservoir was created in 1937. In 1862, gold was discovered in Butchers Gully. There once was a store, butcher's shop and hotel here, back in the gold days... eventually the dam was created and the gully flooded.....

It is said that when the water levels get low, you can still see the chimneystacks under the surface. The water is so clear and glass like, I tried this day to see them. All I saw was reflecting clouds.

Isn't that a contradiction in itself?

Southern Fiscal or Fiscal Shrike (Lanius collaris) seen on the Western Cape of South Africa.

This trail is in Fort McDowell, AZ. It follows along the banks of Saguaro Lake. It is a very pretty hike. Started the hike as the sun was coming and got some nice colors in the clouds.

Grey Butcher birds are aggressive predators. They prey on small animals, including birds, lizards and insects, as well as some fruits and seeds. Uneaten food may be stored in the fork or a branch or impaled. Grey Butcher birds sit on an open perch searching for prey which, once sighted, they pounce on. Most mobile prey is caught on the ground, though small birds and insects may be caught in flight. Feeding normally takes place alone, in pairs or in small family groups.

A walk to a new area in rural Nova Scotia for my wife and I April 22nd to explore a new space. A local photographer's efforts brought this to my spectrum from their post on a Weather Network's Web Site.

A small butcher bird sits waiting in her puffer jacket. All the humans wear them and some birds are clever enough to make their own and follow the fashion.

The statue of Jan Breydel looks to the full moon rising over the Provincial Court building and Markt Square in Bruges (Brugge). Breydel, leader of the butchers, along with Pieter de Coninck, head of the weavers, led a rebellion against the French in 1302 and are considered heroes of the town. The Markt has been used as a place to buy, sell, or barter for goods since 958. When we visited an Easter carnival was ongoing, with cheesy rides for the kids.
