Real estate is a big deal for junk and salvage yard operators, so stacking buys some space.

"Monument" is a sculpture by the German-Syrian artist Manaf Halbouni. Three buses standing vertically on the rear of the vehicle, modelled on a road block built in the Syrian city of Aleppo. The work of art belongs to the Kunsthaus Dresden, where massive protests were caused by the xenophobic Pegida movement and the AfD on the occasion of its exhibition in front of Frauenkriche at the beginning of 2017.

With this project, Manaf Halbouni hopes that Aleppo will be rebuilt after the end of the civil war in Syria - like Dresden after the Second World War.

"Monument" ist eine Skulptur des deutsch-syrischen Künstlers Manaf Halbouni. Drei senkrecht auf den Hecks stehende Busse, nach dem Vorbild einer Straßensperre, die in der syrischen Stadt Aleppo errichtet worden war. Das Kunstwerk gehört dem Kunsthaus Dresden und hat dort anlässlich seiner Ausstellung vor der Frauenkriche Anfang 2017 massive Proteste, vor allem seitens der fremdenfeindlichen Pegida-Bewegung sowie der AfD hervorgerufen.

Manaf Halbouni verbindet mit dem Projekt die Hoffnung, dass Aleppo nach dem Ende des Bürgerkriegs in Syrien - wie Dresden nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg - wieder aufgebaut wird.

Originally designed as a City of Chicago fireboat, the Fred A. Busse was built in Bay City, Michigan, in 1936. The boat was named for the 39th Mayor of Chicago, who served from 1907 until 1911. It was placed into service with the Chicago Fire Department on May 4, 1937; at that time, it was the largest diesel-powered fireboat in the world.

With four water pumps, the boat was rated for a combined 10,000 gallons per minute and could spray water up to 27 stories high. The boat served responded to countless emergencies before being retired by the Fire Department in 1981. After being taken out of service, it was sold and converted into a tour boat. The Busse operated in Chicago for some time, then was sold again and relocated to Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, where it conducted tours until April of 2019. Navy veterans Ray Novak and Erich Totsch subsequently purchased the Busse and used it to start Chicago Fireboat Tours.
