"Launched" on Friday night. The Rocketship was a major art/performance piece at Burning Man 2009.

Becky and I were passing by the tree house one night when we saw that a bunch of other things had gathered around it. This steam engine rolled up right next to the tree house.
A surprising, gnarly sand-twister came over the desert one day. I chased it for about three minutes. I know it sounds crazy, but they are actually fun get close too because the wind whips your bike around and you don't have to pedal... just kind of hang on for the ride with one hand, the other one taking photos!

A view of Cubatron at Burning Man 2007 - powered by solar power collected during the day on the playa. I spent the most amount of time at this art installation, and this shot is the result of my passing the time by experimenting with trying to photograph it. It's fascinating to watch up close, or far away. On the last evening, I was winding down my week at Cubatron, when a random stranger comes up, hugs me and offers me a pair of 3D glasses that intensified the experience tenfold.
"The BRC is the world's largest 3-dimensional full color dynamic light sculpture. It is an array of lights 40 feet in diameter and 10 feet high. It consists of 28 spokes, each of which is 24 lights wide by 9 lights high. Each light is independently controllable to display any color and brightness level and the entire display can be updated 50 times per second. There are 6048 total lights (28 * 24 * 9) made of 18,144 LEDs."

Here's the man burning on Saturday night. It was quite a wild scene for sure... this is taken from the top of Kalliope, one of our camp's six art cars. After this, the party really went crazy and Paris Hilton even came over to join in the fun. I was SO TIRED after being awake for like 36 hours, about midnight I crawled inside the middle of that big VW bus there (Walter) and curled up with my tripod and fell asleep. My friend Ruvi drove Walter back to the camp with me asleep in the cab there... I woke up like at 3 AM trying to figure out what the heck was going on!

In the middle of one afternoon, there was a big gay pride parade that went across the middle of the desert. I mean, I assume that it was a gay pride parade was going on. Maybe it was just a bunch of really fit dudes who have a shared hobby of colorful flags. I didn't ask but they seemed super happy for me to take photos. All you people that live in San Francisco and going to Burning Man are so lucky! (Anyone going this year??) - I have to fly all the way from NZ - but I'll definitely come through SF - I'm sick of LAX. I guess that's another reason you're lucky - you don't have to go through LAX!
