Location: Bar & Restaurant, Siantar Hotel, Simaranjurunjung, North Sumatra, Indonesia. The hotel is located about 1300 m above sea level. The temperature was about 17 degree celcius when we were there.

The national flower of Malaysia is the five-petal Bunga Raya, or commonly known as hibiscus (bunga in Malay means grand and raya means flower). The Bunga Raya can be found in abundance throughout Malaysia, and in 1960 was chosen as the national flower by Tunku Abdul Rahman, Malaysia’s first Prime Minister.
Symbolically, Bunga Raya’s red color represents courage, and the each of the five petals of the Bunga Raya represents the Five Principles of Nationhood of Malaysia.

The five principles of Nationhood represents an attempt to base national unity on certain concepts which are universal and acceptable to all citizens, regardless of ethnic origin or religious affiliation.
Since early times, Bunga Raya has been known for its medical usages. Till today, people still use the roots of the Bunga Raya as a cure for fever while a poultice prepared from the leaves can be applied to cure headache. The application of the juice obtained from Bunga Raya’s leaves and roots are believed to be able to relieve skin eruptions and glandular troubles. Other uses include using the petals to darken and enhance women’s eyebrows!

Mimosa pudica (Sensitive Plant) (pudica = shy), is a creeping annual or perennial herb often grown for its curiosity value: the compound leaves fold inward and droop when touched, re-opening within minutes. The species is native to South America and Central America, but is now a pantropical weed.
The stem is erect in young plants, but becomes creeping or trailing with age. The stem is slender, branching, and sparsely to densely prickly, growing to a length of 1.5 m (5 ft). The leaves are bipinnately compound, with one or two pinnae pairs, and 10-26 leaflets per pinna. The petioles are also prickly. Pedunculate (stalked) pale pink or purple flower heads arise from the leaf axils. The globose to ovoid heads are 8-10 mm in diameter (excluding the stamens). On close examination, it is seen that the floret petals are red in their upper part and the filaments are pink to lavender. The fruit consists of clusters of 2-8 pods from 1-2 cm long each, these prickly on the margins. The pods break into 2-5 segments and contain pale brown seeds some 2.5 mm long. The flowers are pollinated by the wind and insects.
