I was extremely pleased to find these running about at Wollaton Park. If you remember I found one last year, this is a Mesopsocus sp. These are a type of Barkfly, they are quite large as Barkfly go and these were about 3-4mm long. They are very active little things and spend their time running about, but luckily for me every so often they seem to freeze and will stay motionless for a few seconds.
This one stayed put long enough for an 18 image handheld focus stack at about 3-4x mag, I used ISO 400, aperture F/5.6 and a 1/160 shutter speed. I think these are one of the most unusual insects I find, they really are cool critters :o)

I was really pleased to finally witness one of the wonders of the macro world, this is my first capture of the Deuterosminthurus pallipes courtship dance, these little guys were on top of my favourite white bench at Wollaton Park (The only white bench as well).
On the left is a female and she is courting with a smaller male on the right, also there is another male trying to butt in on the action. It really was a mad scene to watch, they were everywhere, there were yellow ones, purple ones and these reddish ones, I have included an extra image in the comments, but I have loads, really tricky to photograph these, a DOF nightmare, they are fast and the top of the bench is curved, also I always hate photographing stuff on a gloss white background. I think I will try some video footage next time, I will set up a tripod over the bench and see if I can get any decent footage, it is great to watch.

Taken with the MP-E at x5, the female was just under 1mm at a guess.

One from a while back, I found this Allacma fusca in woodland and happily went about doing a handheld focus stack, this one was 12 images with my MP-E on my 1.4x teleconverter at F/5.6. It was only when I was editing the image that I noticed something on the right of its head, just below the antennae. I think it is likely to be some sort of Mite, I think I can make out legs and a head end. I don't know if it is parasitic by nature or whether it is phoretic, phoretic basically means that it is using the host as a means of transportation to another area, basically hitching a lift.
Anyway, I hope everyone is having a great weekend and are bracing themselves for the heavy rain that is forecast tonight :o)

This was a very unexpected find, I was watching some juvenile Bourletiella hortensis and suddenly I noticed this strange orange blob on an out of focus greyish blob, on focusing I suddenly realised what I had found, a Bourletiella hortensis carrying a parasitic mite. I guess it would be equivalent of one of us having a tick the size of a big rat, I wonder how long this Mite will stay attached, will it eventually kill the Springtail? It was really tricky trying to photograph this one, the Collembola kept hiding in cracks in the ground. It also looks like the Mite had changed position from the first shot in the comments, I lost sight of it for a while when it went down a crack in the soil :o)
I have wanted to capture something like this for a while, fascinating stuff I think you will agree.
More in comments, if anyone can put an ID to the mite then I would be grateful :o)

Thought I'd do a Stenacidia violacea set, I have a small area at Wilford Claypit, its a small patch of exposed ground surrounded by vegetation, there is a bit of moss there as well, I find quite a variety of Collembola in this small area and Stenacidia violacea is one of the more frequent visitors.
The females of this species grow to about 0.7mm and the males to 0.5mm, the females are generally a reddish colour, although I have seen some variation here. I have only ever found one of the males (See comments) and they are small, they have long antennae that are modified to interlock with the females antennae for part of their mating ritual, unfortunately I have yet to capture this. The male pictured here was about 0.3-0.4mm long and very hard to get any in depth details, I need more magnification LOL :o)

Well after much deliberation I forced myself outside, I could see it was going to be a bit on the windy side. After a while I decided my best option was to start turning over bits of wood and dead leaves, this was one of my finds today.
This is a juvenile Calvatomina rufescens (female) about 1.5mm, quite a pretty little thing this one, it is a nicely coloured species and has an unusual eye patch area with dark red ocelli on a pale orange patch. Interesting that this species is not mentioned on the Roehampton Collembola taxonomy list ?
I also found me a new species of Pseudoscorpion, I'm still deliberating on which to upload.
Better luck with the weather tomorrow I hope, fingers crossed :o)

I'm not sure you could imagine the sheer joy and elation I experienced when I looked through my magnifying glass and saw this little lady, I have wanted to find one of these ever since my friend Andy Murray first discovered this species last year. At the moment this aquatic Springtail is called Sminthurides nr penicillifer and is currently undergoing genetic sequencing to establish if it is in fact a new species to the UK.
I found this one individual today, she was amongst many Sminthurides aquaticus, so I reckon I will return to this pond at Colwick Park to see if I can find more. As far as I know this is only the second find and location for this Collembola species in the UK.

So pleased to finally find my first Large Bee Flies of 2013, also a first as I managed to get shots of them using my MP-E and even more of a first is that this is a 7 image handheld focus stack taken on a very windy day LOL. I decided to approach them at x1 magnification and used an F/9 aperture for this one. This is a female of the species, female Diptera generally have compound eyes that are separated, whereas males have compound eyes that almost meet in the middle.

The large bee fly, Bombylius major, is a bee mimic. The eggs are flicked by the adult female toward the entrance of the underground nests of solitary bees and wasps. After hatching, the larvae find their way into the nests to feed on the grubs.
Bombylius major can be found in April to June throughout temperate Europe and North America and some parts of Asia.
Bombylius major has several host species, including beetle larvae and the brood of solitary wasps and bees particularly digging bees such as Andrena. They mimic bees to allow them to get close to the bees burrow. When close, the female will flick the eggs into or near the nests of the host insects. The larvae are hypermetamorphic parasitoids which then feed on the food stored, as well as the young solitary bees or wasps. If the female is unable to flick her eggs near the nest she plants them on flowers visited by the host insects. The developing larvae then make their way to the host nest or attach themselves to the bees or wasps to then be carried to the nest. Although Bombylius major is an excellent pollinator, the larvae limit the population of other pollinators.
