Cambridge Folk Festival 2017

Today was day one of the motorcycle group ride to Monticello. We started from Socorro, made our way to Magdalena, visited the VLA and enetered the Monticello box. We spent the night in Truth and Consequences. Tomorrow we ride again.

We saw these ruins with a jail sign on the door.

Chaco is remarkable for its monumental public and ceremonial buildings, and its distinctive architecture. To construct the buildings, along with the associated Chacoan roads, ramps, dams, and mounds, required a great deal of well organized and skillful planning, designing, resource gathering, and construction.

A bunny was seen and allowed to be photographed while hiking to Penasco Blanco at Chaco Canyon.

This bugg was sitting on the window on the inside.

Imposing as it may have been, Tulúm was built around 1200AD as the Mayan civilization declined and lacks the elegance of earlier structures. For instance, whilst earlier Maya buildings typically had vaulted roofs, the ones in Tulúm were often flat and have consequently fallen much sooner.

The layout of the site is unusually structural, with parallel streets surrounded by walls originally five meters high and seven meters deep. Most of the walls can still be seen, indeed the present day entrance to the ruins is as it was in ancient times, through a gate on western side of the fortifications.

Chaco Canyon was a major center of ancestral Puebloan culture between AD 850 and 1250. It was a hub of ceremony, trade, and administration for the prehistoric Four Corners area - unlike anything before or since.
