The McKinley Monument is a towering 29-metre (96-foot) tall obelisk located in the center of Niagara Square, the civic heart of Buffalo, New York.
Significance: The monument was erected in memory of William McKinley, the 25th President of the United States, who was assassinated while attending the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo in 1901.
Design: It is crafted from white Vermont marble and was designed by the architects Carrère and Hastings. The obelisk is surrounded by a base featuring fountains and eight sculpted marble lions looking outward, symbolizing strength and watchfulness.
Location: It stands directly in front of Buffalo City Hall. The square serves as the focal point where the city's main avenues converge, following Buffalo's original radial street plan.
Fun Fact: The monument was dedicated in 1907. Its design is intentionally simple and abstract, focusing on the elegance of its form to convey respect and solemnity.
I woke up at 4:30 to catch the morning light at a different location. That spot turned out to be a bust for me, but I caught this magical scene on my way home!
Tech Specs: 3 shot HDR made with my Olympus OM-D e-m1.2 with the m.Zuiko 12-40mm f2.8 Pro lens and NiSi CirPL filter mounted on my meFoto Globetrotter Classic tripod. I leveraged the Olympus High Res shot mode to squeeze as much detail as possible and this also deliciously extended the exposure. Base exposure info 29mm | f8 | ISO 200 | 1/40th sec. Adding all the exposures up that created this image means the shutter was open about 3/4th of a second.
Post-Processing: I started out in DxO Photo Lab 4 and Nik HDR Efex Pro for the initial RAW processing, but I finished my workflow in On1 Photo RAW 2020.5.

It was designed by architects George J. Dietel and John Wade. The friezes were sculpted by Albert Stewart and the sculpture executed by Rene Paul Chambellan. The foyer features a bronze tablet honoring Mayor Roesch, created in 1937 by regional sculptor, William Ehrich.
Buffalo City Hall was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1999. It is located within the Joseph Ellicott Historic District.

I'm not normally one to play with a heavier HDR treatment, but this subject just seemed to call for it. The fiery sunset over the frozen waters of Buffalo's Outer Harbor made for a number of interesting compositions.

Not every shot in my collection shows one of these pros soaring through the air in the midst of a spectacular trick. I think this one show just the punishment these riders can take. Keep in mind, the demo was happening pretty close to shore, so the waters were 2.5-4 feet deep.

The Saint Louis Roman Catholic Church is one of the oldest and most architecturally stunning Catholic churches in Buffalo, New York.
History: The parish was initially established in 1829, making it one of the oldest Catholic congregations in Buffalo. The current building, the fourth for the parish, was constructed between 1886 and 1889.
Architectural Style: It is an outstanding example of Gothic Revival. Its most striking feature is its impressive open-work spire which soars to 245 feet (75 meters), designed by German architect Adolphus Druiding. This spire is considered one of the city's most beautiful and iconic landmarks.
Cultural Heritage: The church was historically an important center for Buffalo's German Catholic community. Its interior is richly adorned with colourful stained glass, murals, and an elaborate high altar.
Recognition: It was declared a City Landmark in 1974.
