There was a time, a century and more ago when most of the land in Vermont and this part of neighboring New York was cleared for grazing and crops. Over time, farming dwindled, the forest encroached to reclaim its acreage. Now there’s a handsome mix of farm and forest with its own ecology and appeal.

I was at the edge of the water, hoping for spoonbills, when I saw this Great Blue Heron get a bit more intense about his fishing. A gator also noticed and altered the direction of its path directly toward the heron. I was hoping for mayhem, imagining the heron with a fish (or better), the gator leaping in the air to grab them both, water flying, heart pumping. You get it. Well, the heron caught this nice fish, the gator decided to go to where it was originally headed and instead of mayhem, maybe for the better, I got this bucolic image of the heron flying over the still water. You just never know. (Great Blue Heron - Ardea herodias)

Une vache paissait tranquilement dans le pré devant le clocher; cela ajoutait encore à la paix et à la sérénité qui se dégageait de la scène.
Quand j'eus fini de prendre ma photo, une petite surprise m'attendait (voir la photo suivante).

Bucolic softness
I loved the bucolic charm and the beauty of this place.
A cow was grazing quietly in the meadow in front of the bell tower. This added to the peace and serenity that emanated from the scene.
When I finished taking my shot, a little surprise awaited me (see the next shot)

La Grange du Bois - Bourgogne du sud/South Burgundy
These greens are crisp and bold after an early June rain, the first cutting is in the barn, a nascent vineyard thrives. I find it interesting how a daub or two of red adds energy to a landscape.
CN W900 with ONT 560 emerges into a bucolic scene on the CN Newmarket sub North of Huntsville being powered by ONR 1806-1801 as CN pleaded for assistance to free the Newmarket sub from winters clench as 4 days of heavy snow and strong winds combined with no train traffic what so ever completely snowed in the line between Washago and North Bay. I found myself up here thanks to CN running a W908 Jordan spreader along the line to tidy up the ROW and much to my surprise I heard ONR 1806 S getting a clearance onto the Newmarket departing North Bay. What a fantastic way to end 2022 and ring in the new year.
