A view of downtown Santa Barbara from Gibraltar Peak, a communications site serving the South Coast of California from over 2500 feet above the Pacific. It's managed by Community Radio Inc.. Many of Santa Barbara's local FM and TV signals broadcast from here.
The dark green ridge in the foreground is Santa Barbara's Riviera district. Geologically, it's land that slid off the face of the mountain on which I am standing here. That happened in the Pleistocene, dozens of thousands of years ago, which is geologically yesterday. My home is on the far side of it, facing the ocean but not this broadcast site, which is why all the signals from here are very beat up when they arrive. The FM stations broadcasting with HD Radio, however, sound great, because the digital part of the signal works fine.
Mouse over the left side to see some AM and an FM facility in the view.

"Nation shall speak peace unto nation". (Actually, fact fiends, this phrase first appeared in 1932 at the BBC. In 1934, it was changed to Quaecunque (which means 'Whatsover'), but the old version came back to be part of the christmas card in 1948. The quotation comes from Dr. Montague Rendall, who was one of the founding governors of the BBC and formerly the Headmaster of Winchester; although it was also apparently thought up by J. C. Stobart, a BBC staffer in 1924 who was their first Director of Education.)
Anyway, it's just had all the scaffolding outside pulled down, and in spite of a catty post on Flickr a little bit ago, it's actually quite nice close up.

The headline act to Museums at Night - Public Service Broadcasting
Public Service Broadcasting is a London-based pseudonymous musical duo consisting of J. Willgoose, Esq. on guitar, banjo, other stringed instruments, samplings and electronic instruments; and Wrigglesworth on drums, piano and electronic instruments.
Granted unique access to propaganda films from WWII-era Britain by the BFI, the band perform in front of breathtaking visuals to a soundtrack of atmospheric synths, pounding drums, Krautrock guitars and poignant piano - beaming the past back at us through vintage TV sets and state of the art modern video projections.
