this is a good friend of mine, we were experimenting with the concept of old-timey portraiture.

The gulf between breakup and springtime can be a wide one in Nova Scotia. Even though the Annapolis River certainly won't freeze again this season, cold weather persists for weeks. While folks in warmer parts of the continent mark spring as coming when the calendar claims, there are few signs here until a month after. Vague early hints come in the form of snowdrops and crocuses. They sprout when the snow fades. Then it's buds on branches, hints of leaves, the first time I mow the lawn in late April. I don't expect to stand in green shade until at least the middle of May. Just in time for blackflies to join me. It might seem like I'm complaining, but that's not the case – I've gained a lot from little hopes, held fast and lingering. There's a grand lesson learned in a good, long wait. I get offered each year that same sweet reminder. Don't get ahead of yourself, it's bound to catch up with you. Maybe my concept of patience is meant to be constantly tested. I think of it as softening to edges of a too-eager mind.
