The thick growth at the tip of each branch is this year's new growth. What you see in this photo is a washed out green. In reality, it's a rich green. I don't know why the camera didn't record the color properly. And no matter what post processing I tried, I couldn't bring out the richer green of the tips.

Ah , spring and the shrubs flower just like the cactus in the desert. They can be boring the rest of the year but in spring they really come to life.
Under the spreading chestnut tree,
Where I knelt upon my knee
In water proof trousers dry as can be

I was all prepared to accept a downpour of the wet stuff on Saturday, so I went out all prepared with waterproofs and hey presto the sun came out. I'm not complaining either way because it was a very fine day and another opportunity to explore the hidden gems at Thorndon Country Park.
