Steven Strogatz has a way of finding rhythm in places most people overlook. In his office at Malott Hall at Cornell, and later in the Space Sciences Building at the SPIF, that rhythm came alive in a simple but elegant experiment. Two small metronomes ticked on a shared platform, gradually aligning their beats as if discovering a shared pulse. Strogatz leaned in, smiling as the synchronization unfolded. The moment captured both his joy and his curiosity, the twin forces that have guided his life in mathematics.

For decades, Strogatz has explored the hidden order beneath the world’s apparent chaos. His work has spanned from the synchrony of fireflies flashing in unison to the oscillations of the human heart. He has revealed how patterns emerge naturally when systems, whether biological, physical, or social, interact in just the right way. His research on coupled oscillators, complex networks, and nonlinear dynamics has reshaped how scientists think about everything from brain function to the spread of ideas.

At Cornell, Strogatz is known as a gifted communicator who bridges the gap between advanced mathematics and everyday experience. His lectures attract students from across the university. In books such as Sync, The Joy of x, and Infinite Powers, he writes with clarity and wonder, turning abstract ideas into stories that feel alive. His voice carries the same enthusiasm whether he is explaining calculus or describing the geometry of friendship.

What sets him apart is not only his command of mathematics but his warmth and wit. He listens as carefully as he speaks, often finding metaphors in the natural world or in a casual conversation with a colleague. His humor disarms. His curiosity invites. Watching him adjust the metronomes, eyes bright behind his glasses, it is easy to understand why students and collaborators describe him as both rigorous and kind.

Beneath it all is a belief that mathematics is not separate from life but a language that reveals its beauty. The dance of the metronomes, the firing of neurons, the movement of planets, and the laughter shared across a classroom all express a single truth about connection and harmony.

In person, Strogatz radiates calm delight in the act of discovery. The photograph from that afternoon shows him resting on his arms, thoughtful, as the metronomes begin to fall into sync before him. It is a quiet moment that suggests something larger, a glimpse of the universal tendency toward order and the human impulse to understand it.

Specifically a hand-ax from the Beauvais region in France, such tools was generally used by both early humans and certain animals for survival functions. By first looking at the hand-ax, it is evident that this instrument has been corroded by striking and cutting purposes. Noticeable for its uneven surface and edges, the striking was completed by the flaking method, which interestingly highlights the cognitive activity of the early humans. Through research, it has been understood that early hominids had an exceptional understanding of the properties of raw materials utilized for tool usage. With such knowledge, pre-modern humans demonstrated their knowledge of quartzite, volcanic glass, limestone, and other stones by skillfully directing accurate striking. As a result, early hominids produced many well formed flakes. In addition, due to the competitive environment of early Earth, prehistoric humans were coerced by external pressures to create new and more innovative tools. Along with habitual tool making and tool utilization, such a daily routine is believed to have a positive effect on the development of mental capability and brain function. In this specific hand-ax tool, it probably had the purpose to serve as an instrument in food or everyday needs. Due to cutting and hammering usages, certain areas of the hand-axe had developed indents or began to chip away.

Last September, at the BMX Bandits A High Flying Ride To Adventure Shirt and I will buy this London Design Festival, participants were asked to craft a desk that would fit our current housebound lives. The eponymous studio of British architect and designer Thomas Heatherwick submitted a glass-and-maple-wood structure with undulating legs from which plants sprouted. Exposure to natural environments…has very tangible improvements to brain functioning, he said at the time. It’s a scientific statement underlined by common sense and freshly embraced by the design world: Biophilic design is good for you.

Black birds are an incredibly diverse group, encompassing species from several families that share predominantly dark, melanin-rich plumage. This melanin not only gives them their distinctive shiny, sometimes iridescent appearance but also enhances feather durability and provides protection from the sun. The group includes everything from intelligent corvids such as crows and ravens to the more melodious blackbirds known for their captivating songs .

In many parts of the world, black birds have woven themselves into cultural folklore and mythology. For instance, ravens and crows are often featured as omens or symbols of mystery in Western literature—Edgar Allan Poe’s famous “The Raven” being a prime example—while other cultures celebrate these birds as embodiments of wisdom, transformation, or even good fortune. Such dual roles in different societies underscore how these creatures have long captured the human imagination.

Ecologically, black birds are noted for their adaptability. They often thrive in a variety of environments—from deep forests and rustic farmlands to bustling urban parks and suburban gardens. Their diets are just as varied; while many species are opportunistic feeders—crows and ravens, for instance, will consume insects, small animals, or carrion—others such as the European blackbird (a member of the thrush family) feed on a mix of invertebrates and fruit. This dietary flexibility, coupled with their often elaborate social and mating behaviors, has helped many black bird species become common and widespread.

A subject of extensive scientific interest, several black bird species, particularly those in the corvid family, have demonstrated advanced cognitive abilities that rival those of many mammals. Their capacity for problem-solving, memory, and even tool use has made them key models in studies of animal intelligence and behavior, offering valuable insights into the evolutionary development of complex brain functions.

Have you wonder, what’s inside a LEGO minifigure’s head?

Let me share with you what I’ve discovered when I split this giant LEGO minifig in the middle. You discover two different worlds:

On the left brain: A Scientist’s Lab

This half is all about science and discovery! Two minifig scientists working hard in a lab with microscope, computer, and a big specimen tank. They’re busy studying how LEGO brick and minifig works. This thinking and learning side just like how human’s left brain function.

On the right brain: A Kid’s Dream Space

This half is about fun and imagination! A minifig kid is sitting on the floor, happily building with LEGO bricks. He’s dreaming up wild creations and imagining his own LEGO model someday being displayed at LEGO House! This is the minifig’s playful, dreaming side and it relate with human’s right brain.

Wait! Seems like the orange “piping” in the minfig head is the corpus callosum, which it form a brigde and allows communication between the left and right brain!

Today has been a difficult day. One of my son's good friends was hit by a car in this crosswalk this morning. It is not looking good; he has no brain function. We went up to the hospital- everyone is so hopeful. It is hard being in the emergency medicine field and knowing the truth. I am trying not to think about his parents. He is their only child. I can't even imagine going home to all of his things...

I am so sad.
