One of our coveted target birds as we headed into the Outback, driving nine hours west from Brisbane, was Bourke's Parrot. This tiny pastel parrot lives in dry mulga and acacia forests of the interior, where it can be difficult to find. To illustrate this point, I compared the total number of records in eBird for Rainbow Lorikeet (a mighty 1.1 million records at the time I uploaded this photo) to Bourke's Parrot (a paltry 5,300 records). Part of that discrepancy is that there are just fewer birders that make it to the Outback, but part of the difference is the nature of the birds themselves and how easy they are to find. We felt SO fortunate that we, a couple of visiting Americans with a few days to soak in as much of the Outback as we could, contributed to this record total. Bowra Station, Queensland, Australia
