I love the faces and human forms in this chaotic collection of haunted waterfalls. This has got to be the most challenging waterfall I've attempted to capture. I've been here once before, and botched the job so bad, I never showed the photos to anyone. It's a small miracle I was able to get this shot working. It's a big wide flow that requires at least a 2 shot pano, and the conditions were essentially like being in a shower. It was raining this time and the mist from the falls was just insane. I was completely drenched walking back to my truck, and my camera might as well have been dropped in a bathtub. My technique was to wipe the lens for the two second timer right up to the moment the shutter opened for each shot.

When you completely botch a shot, you can either discard it or embrace it and run with it. At least as long as there is something to run with.

I think I have seen this scene in a hundred movies but I just couldn't resist grabbing one for myself. :) It was taken on the 7th day of a ten day trip and already I was running on empty. I had originally intended to hike the area but I only really had time for a drive by shooting session. This is the entrance to the John Wayne Trail and there was even a sign saying so. I had done a long foreground to background composition but I botched the dof. :/ That's ok I'm going back in 3 weeks to exact my revenge, Hope you like it. Thanks. :)

And thank you for taking the time to take a look at my photos and as always, your views, comments, faves, and support are greatly appreciated!! Have a great weekend my friends :)

If you have any questions about this photo or about photography in general, I will do my best to help, just post a comment or send me a Flickr mail and I will respond as quickly as possible.

Went out to shoot the Neowise comet, but came back with a lighthouse shot!

Last Thursday I had a Neowise shoot scheduled, but my plans were derailed by bad weather (cloudy and windy conditions). Postponed for next day (Friday last week) as weather forecast was reassuring. Upon arrival to the spot (Cape Roca, about 30 kms from Lisbon) I was dismayed as the conditions were exactly the same as in the previous day: cloudy (as can be seen from this shot) and extremely windy (impossible to use the tripod), making the comet shoot a mirage.

This Cape Roca’s lighthouse shot, proves I was there! It’s an handheld shot that I find interesting due to its original perspective. Taken from close to Bear Beach (northwards of the lighthouse) it provides a striking image of the amazing terrain that drops abruptly to the sea. The golden hour light enveloped the whole image and created a soft and beautiful mood.

Hope you’ll enjoy the remains of my botched expedition to chase a comet… Have a wonderful day, dear flickr friends!

First bird photo of 2020... off my balcony... chilly today but not too bad... three Jays in the trees, a Blackbird... I'll take the Laughing Dove... a good omen, yes?

I was hoping that the first bird I could get for 2020 would be the male Palestinian Sunbird we have around here. There is a pair that flits about around our building... I have seen the male last week with my bins and he is incredible with his iridescent feathers... I photographed him maybe three or four months ago also and because he is all black, I botched the exposure... I'm going to get that photo soon... I can feel it... :-)

In the mean time, I'm happy with this attractive Laughing Dove... took this without the 2xTC that I use out in the field...

Spaziergänger in der Bötcher Straße Bremen.

This was taken a few years ago, and I was never really happy with the result. I was still new to LE photography and kind of botched the shoot. I figured a new edit might bring it to life, somewhat. Enjoy!

On a Sundial

~Hilaire Belloc~

IN SOFT deluding lies let fools delight.

A Shadow marks our days; which end in Night.

ON ANOTHER

How slow the Shadow creeps: but when 'tis past

How fast the Shadows fall. How fast! How fast!

ON ANOTHER

Loss, and Possession, Death and Life are one.

There falls no shadow where there shines no sun.

ON ANOTHER

Stealthy the silent hours advance, and still;

And each may wound you, and the last shall kill.

ON ANOTHER

Here in a lonely glade, forgotten, I

Mark the tremendous process of the sky.

So does your inmost soul, forgotten, mark

The Dawn, the Noon, the coming of the Dark.

ON ANOTHER

I that still point to one enduring star

Abandoned am, as all the Constant are.

ON ANOTHER

Save on the rare occasions when the Sun

Is shining, I am only here for fun.

ON ANOTHER

I am a sundial, and I make a botch

Of what is done far better by a watch.

ON ANOTHER

I am a sundial, turned the wrong way round.

I cost my foolish mistress fifty pound.

ON A SUNDIAL

Creep, shadow, creep: my ageing hours tell.

I cannot stop you, so you may as well.

ON ANOTHER

I am a Sundial. Ordinary words

Cannot express my thoughts on Birds.

Ya gotta do it. It's just a matter of time before this botched, clean unit starts to look like the rest. And that is filthy dirty. So loaded with nothing but time on my hands to burn I headed for Dale to bang this gem under a blue dome at not one mile an hour under track speed.

Patience and Planning. The two ingredients that made this shot.

I've wanted this shot for 2 years now, but conditions must become optimal on multiple levels for it to fire.

The coast must have no fog. Do you know how rare that is, on the coast, late at night, during summer?

The tide must be one of the lowest of the year. Complete negative low tide. Small swell is also a big factor.

And finally, the Milky Way alignment window is very specific, so you must have your calculations precise or you will botch your attempt.

Everything came together last month and I called my good friend Josh Crites with the good news regarding weather. We drove down at 2:30am and scored until 4am. The bonus cherry on top was it was the first time we both had scored Shark Fin with no other photographers around. We shot the classic dead center cave comp first, then with 15 minutes left in our window to shoot we scooted towards the water and to the left, trying to get the entire Fin in the frame. This is the first cave shot of the Milky Way I've seen this far out and with so much Fin visible.

The green light to the right was a fishing boat throwing light from around the northern rim of the cove.

This shot is a blend.

I have been shooting RAW full time for roughly 9 years now, and editing them offer so much more flexibility than straight JPEG files off of the camera. In addition to shooting RAW for that long, I have been doing flash work for close to 7 now, and in that time, I have lost count on shots that I have botched in some capacity that I chalk up to learning experiences. However, there are a select few, a few photos that have fallen into a list that no matter how many successful trips since attempting, stay in my mind for my failures, photos that are painful lessons and make you hate this hobby and crush the desire to want to shoot anytime soon after.

Almost 5 years ago, when I was working in Lansing still, it was not often that I carried my night equipment to work, so there were opportunities that I missed, but for some reason on this day, I brought them to work, and at the time I was thrilled I had when I saw that L501 came out of the tunnel with BCOL 4642 leading. I got all my work done and had some free time at the end of the night when they were leaving Flint, and I made the decision to risk it at the Lansing Coal Tower, which for me at that time, going to at night was anything but something I enjoyed. As a result of this hesitance, I elected to delay my set up to limit my time there, which I grossly underestimated. With limited time to set up and plan accordingly, lights were not set up properly, no testing took place, and the shot was, at the time, deemed a painful failure that made the infamous list. The photo stayed on a memory card that was replaced with a faster card and resided in my bag ever since.

Fast forward to a few days ago, while dumping my active card, I noticed a wonderfully lit rainbow above my house after a brief thundershower, and in a moment of haste, I grabbed a backup card in my bag, the card that held this shot, and it was discovered this existed while looking through it. With fresh eyes, 5 additional years of editing experiencing, and some odd optimism that I could save it, success came to fruition. While it did take more work than what I like to do, the flexibility of RAW files came through, and took a photo that spent so long on the list of painful lessons was successfully removed and is now one I can call good enough.

On the Go - Keeping up with Bobcats on the move is challenging - even when they are fully comfortable. They have their own plans and it's up to me to keep up without getting in their way and getting whatever images I can. Two general observations I've noted when photographing Bobcats are: 1. They don't like being followed from directly behind, 2. They don't like being suddenly cut off or blocked directly from the front. I've learned to stay parallel to them at a respectful distance and match their pace (almost like photographers do at track meet finishes). This way I'm moving with them and not trailing or cutting them off. I also noted that Bobcats and other mammals can move surprisingly fast through one's field of view. I found that using the same shutter speed ranges of 1/1600-1/5000 that I use for raptor in flight work really well for freezing mammals up close in a trot. Lastly, manual mode with bounded auto-ISO and exposure compensation has been a life-saver with subjects moving quickly through mixed shade/sun situations. I used to shoot full manual and would constantly botch situations like this because I wouldn't be able to keep up with my settings.

'Tis almost time to go apple picking.

Don't mind my botched reins - I'm still learning how to draw them!

The New Palace (1763 - 1769) with its adjoining buildings forms the end of the Sanssouci palace park - an imposing counterpart to the small, intimate Sanssouci.

Frederick II himself called the New Palace a "fanfaronade", a show-off, a boast, because he only used the magnificent building as guest accommodation and a setting for lavish parties.

Interesting facts from the construction period:

The construction workers had to work quickly and put up with botched work. They also had to imitate the expensive brick in poor Prussia. The façade was painted red and then the joint lines were white painted on!

The New Palace - a prestige building, is the most impressive and largest building in the Sanssouci palace complex. With its pompous interior, long suites of rooms, lavishly decorated banqueting halls and galleries, the palace was fascinating even then - and still is today.

Inveraray, Schottland

Exactly twenty years ago today, the Canadian National Railroad finalized their acquisition of Great Lakes Transportation and successfully absorbed its shortline subsidiaries, which included the fan favorite Bessemer & Lake Erie Railroad. Changes made by the new owner were initially very minimal in the first decade following the purchase, however things quickly took a turn for the worse when a group of Illinois Central SD70s arrived on the property in the Spring of 2015 for the purpose of replacing the aging fleet of SD38s and Tunnel Motors in use at the time.

As the attractive orange EMDs were shipped off to other parts of the CN system, the chances of seeing a once common trio of all Bessemer painted power on an actual road train became increasingly slim. The handful of SD38 units that remained on the property were basically relegated to yard service at Conneaut for years, and the only remaining Tunnel Motor happened to be the 905, a wreck repair which had KCS yellow nose stripes clearly visible through its botched paint job.

Just when it seemed things would never get better, in a bizarre turn of events, BLE 878 mysteriously arrived back on Bessemer property in October of 2019 and was almost immediately set up with the the 867 and 905, the other orange motors being used out of Greenville at the time. The morning of October 9th happened to be the first occurrence in which all three units were used on the railroad's misc job for a Butler turn out of Greenville. The eclectic trio made for a great sight at the first photo location of the day as they banged across the diamond with NS's Meadville Line at XN Tower. This is the beginning of CTC coming out of the shops at Greenville and this line, commonly called the low line, will join with the actual mainline at Kelsey, just a few miles ahead.

Naturally something this nice could never last. Big DP equipped CN SD70M-2s now dominate the taconite trains between Conneaut and North Bessemer. The 878 is now the last orange unit on the property and usually handles mixed freight duties along with the Bessemer stenciled but Missabe painted 862. As frustrating as it is to see that the railroad is a shell of its former self, the fact that it is completely isolated from the rest of the CN system has undoubtedly helped slow the changing process. If a company like Genesee & Wyoming or Watco had taken control of the operation, there is almost no chance it would exist in its current form. Ancient CTC hardware still guides trains of taconite pellets and local freight across the railroad and that same sense of pride and commitment the Bessemer had to the steel industry can still be seen in the small group of railroaders that work on this far corner of the CN system.

Bought some tiny roses and decided... well... to put them in a tiny teacup. ;))

This is shot number 1 out of 426 shots I took this morning. Almost all the rest have been deleted! Everything looked great through the viewfinder as I set the 1/18th scale model cars up in all sorts of forced perspective situations, but in every one of them, the focus was out by the smallest amount, just enough to have botched every single shot! Some I have salvaged for my own viewing, but at least I can go out on any another day and try again. These days happen now and then. Even on this shot, I did not nail the focus point as I wanted, but it still captures the beautiful shining paintwork reflecting the birch trees and surrounds in my street. I had to have one keeper!
