The Searle Valley Mineral company is in the foreground. It is a large mining operation in the dry lake bed of the Searle valley. They produce - borax, boric acid, soda ash, salt cake, and salt. The valley is on the eastern side of the Sierra mountains.
The pinnacles were formed in the lake when it had water as minerals bubbled up in the lake bed and limestone formations were formed. Much like stalactites and stalagmites in caves. The first mountain range is the Slate Range and the Panamint valley is on the other side of those mountains. The mountains in the far background that are snow capped are the Panamint range. Death Valley is on the far side of those mountains.

The ants are back. Several times a year -- usually after a hard rain or a neighbor's outdoor pesticide application -- they venture into my house in droves. First we catch one or two errant ants sauntering through random areas. A few days later, we spot a long thin line of pepper sprinkles trickling across the floor in an orderly fashion. Then the trickle becomes a stream. Today they are surging across the entrance to our bedroom, from one corner of the frame to the other, back and forth.
I'll admit that they fascinate me. Hundreds of tiny beings patiently traverse long distances in search of food, leaving an invisible trail for their fellow Formicidae friends. In 4th grade, I had an ant farm, culled from an invasive colony. Too bad the li'l buggers in my house aren't safely tucked away behind glass instead of invading my space and occasionally crawling onto one of us for a stinging skin snack. Ouch!
The only treatment I've found that successfully expels these creatures from my home is Boric Acid -- specifically, Terro Liquid Ant Bait. I set out a few stations near their entrance. In less than 24 hours, the station fills with tiny dark red arthropods who unload its contents and bring the poisonous food back to their colony. Usually the invaders disappear within a few days. Lately they don't seem to want to go into the stations. As an experiment, Zack mixed another brand of orthoboric acid with some olive oil, creating a snack preferred by grease ants. Our guests didn't seem to like this, so Zack poured several drops of unaltered ant bait onto an old green plastic cutting board. A small number of ants (including the two in my photo) seemed to enjoy this sweet treat, but certainly not enough to deliver a significant amount to the nest. Finally, he emptied one of the Terro containers onto the surface. Several creatures swarmed to feed on the clear colorless liquid. For the win!

The flame is green colored because of trimethyl borate - the organoboron compound with the formula B(OCH3)3. It is synthesized by dissolving boric acid with methanol.

during the rains, we discovered this Jerusalem cricket right inside our front door. Perhaps it followed the trail of sweetened boric acid powder we use to keep ants at bay, because it made a beeline (cricket line?) to a small heap of the stuff in a corner. It stayed just long enough to be photographed, and then was given a one-way ticket to the other side of the street.
Boric Acid, in methanol Heet(tm). makes a pretty green flame. this photo really does not show it well. its ghostly green.
i don't like to kill, don't eat meat, etc., but i will make an exception for certain pests in the house, esp. if they are impossible to capture and evict. have some boric acid juice, ants!
So these ants invaded our kitchen today. We've seen a few of them at a time in the past, but today was an apocalyptic increase in the number. They were all on the plate from my morning waffle surrounding the syrup. I assumed they were going for the sugar, so I put out a mixture of sugar and boric acid, which they ignored. After I added a little water they started going for it though. We'll see how they look in the morning, the boric acid ought to take care of them.

Of course, boric acid is considered to be as safe as table salt, but it can be an irritant. I didn't want to be any more irritated than I already am.
