This is a so-called lifer, accessed thanks to the kindness of a neighbour, who found it on his property in a tree sometimes visited by a Northern Saw-whet..

Even though the owl was protected in the canopy of this conifer, the strong gusty wind would ruffle its breast feathers and caused it to hide its face much of the time that I was there.

You aren't bored. You are boring.

BLOG #94

I think they might even be Googling the rules of snakes and ladders... Some more HDR loveliness for Sliders Sunday - HSS, everybody! :)

We went quite far into the swamps in search of a sunrise shooting location. It was our mistake, along the way we missed a couple of pretty good ones in search of the best one. Therefore, we met the dawn at a rather boring location

Accompanied my son to the Houston Zoo on a sunny Saturday, chockablock with parents with children of all ages learning something important about the diversity of life. That's an important mission for a zoo; preserving species in the midst of the sixth (anthropomorphic) extinction is another. I took my camera. Looking at my photos later I resolved not to photograph captive animals. But the expression on this gorilla's face, which summed up my predicament (and his or her predicament), had to be posted. What's the right thing to do?

Simply a beautiful bird. I was super lucky to have been directed to this wonderful owl and even better was able to point it out to my daughters from distance. I've tried visiting this park a few times in futility in search of this owl, but this time it was in the relative open roosting. Not the best place as it was mobbed by chickadees which is why it's eyes were open on this occasion before falling back to sleep.

… Look into Jimmy’s eyes and ask yourself whether he – or any ape for that matter – belongs to a zoo, even as well intentioned and caring an institution as ZSL London Zoo.

I try to convince myself that the facts he was born in captivity and Northern white cheek gibbons are almost wiped out in the wild matter… then I take another look at his face…

Home away from Home

Took today off from work (out late last night at a choir concert), and went over to Commonwealth Lake this morning. I heard active chickadees in the trees on the north end of the park. Didn't get any shots of them (pretty dark there, and they move fast), then spotted a large dark mass in one of the trees. Turns out it as the elusive barred owl I'd heard of others having seen. Got a series of it as it posed for me. Eventually it got bored with me, so I moved on. By the way, this is a lifer for me!

A great Gray Owl perches at nightfall

Sometimes, I just sit around bored. I think we all can do that. Oddly my boredom struck a thought in me for this picture. Black Dragon is still very nice for pics. Just saying.

The Boreal Owl. What an awesome mix of ferocity and cuteness...

This little one came in just after I spread the seeds on my deck rail. I hope it hangs around over the winter now that it has discovered a food source.

Millie's Pups are now 4weeks old - all doing well and cute to watch! and to photograph!!

Fledge number two. 2 pm this afternoon. Ready to fly. (but what about all these wolves?)

Muted processing for this time of year. The boardwalk appears so still and lifeless at this time of year. Not necessarily the case though, as I found some cool invertebrate life, which I'll post shortly!

This owl was perched in a sheltered spot on a neighbour's property while enduring a mini-blizzard. It was mostly sleeping but Blue Jays were harassing it here.
