While having a walk at dawn with my mother - the weather's cloudy gray and soft windy - she plucked this beauty and came to me and said, "look, how beautiful this is". And she hold it in her hand and I took the pictures. This is the only flower in the mini bouquet today.

The white roses in their own mornings have beauty so exceptional than anything else.

📚 I've finished reading Wuthering Heights last night, which kept me awake till 1 am. What a story. It kept me hooked and I couldn't rest till I finally reached the end. Also, my mind was blowing with all the ups and downs and the tensions within the story, and it has such characters. Which novel do you think I should try also?

Memory back from a trip with my mother last month when I went home. This was from the near the end of a whole casually enjoyed day with some colourful atmosphere which finally won my attention(I'm not quite an outing-with-crowds person, rather more of a sitting-silently-and-reading kinda girl). Right now here nature is fresh greenish with sweet, cold, slow breeze reminding of the last days of winter, so reflecting on the flowers in memory.

Hope you're alright and having bright, peaceful days :)

P.S. Currently at the end of the Chronicles of Narnia marathon(almost), after which I'd take a short break and start another(In Sha Allah). About which I'm a bit confused... what do u suggest I should read next - lotr or Anne series? (My heart's going for Montgomery)

Purple pink dawn sky with a dreamy haze; from last year.

📚 Anyone knows good Miss Marple novels to enjoy?

As the whole 2024 had its ups and downs,

my heart so longed for winter, knew it has to come, the nature aligned with the lives and gave us storms every now and then. and then, just as I wanted, it came, Alhamdulillah :)

I'd like to give an account of whatever happened and why I couldn't come here much -

the yr kinda started with row in a family matter

I was depressed a whole January, mostly bedridden and while missing many classes in the toughest year

I wasn't allowed to sit for some of my exams (and attended altogher later which worsened my health at the end)

there was a fire that in my building during vacation when everyone was out but I didn't go, so I caught it first saving from the spread but later got busted instead

I fell in love for the first time

I had been in love with whatever I was doing during free times, attended many surgeries.

the country had issues and we had to fight in the hospital during casualty days. I was homeless for some time and stayed with some friends and in the hospital.

I got my heart broken so many little times.

I've been bullied by toxic people in profile ground too, facing how professional life is for the first time, which worsened my health again.

I made many good friends and well-wishers too.

I learnt many skills while couldn't attend exams, so it wouldn't go to waste.

I think at the same time I was ahead of the curve and got lost.

So many in and around my life judged me and got me wrong too. Lastly I got into fight with many due to my temper and attacks, but also made amends as much as I could.

I read some great books - When breathe becomes air (written by dying neurosurgeon that I'd recommend every doc and patients to read), Man's search for meanings(written by a concentration camp survivor psychiatrist), some stories of Edgar Allan Poe, Metamorphosis, currently The midnight library.

Long story short, I survived :)

Now attending exams but weren't up to my satisfaction, and still in love :)

Winter has warmed my soul

Send my some prayers so I get rid of health issues soon, and get through these exams.

How was your year?

What are the books that you have read and loved?

How's the weather?

Sending love and well-wishes to all 💕🍂🍃

A favorite book of mine by Carl Hiassen, which depicts Florida hurricanes and culture terrifyingly well.

Highly Recommended.

That is in fact the name of the book (not the Katie part, of course), and if you're at all interested in history, it's worth picking up and perusing. As you know, I myself enjoy various crafts, but this particular book gave me an increased appreciation for such things—particularly quilts (though I blame the hideous busyness and lack of concern for any semblance of cohesiveness in 1980s quilts for this) and, of all things, decoys. The latter can be quite the work of art indeed!

Not long after finishing this delightful look at things Americans have long made with our hands, I stumbled across a few dozen old decoys at Heart of Ohio, and that "new appreciation" really came in handy, as yours truly had a fuller understanding of what she was looking at and what went into creating them.

"America's Traditional Crafts" also covers things like pottery of all kinds, scrimshaw and leatherwork, the beadwork and quill work of Native Americans (amazing), rugs, baskets, tin...all of it. Perhaps best of all, this is actually the kind of book you can repeatedly, happily pick up and flip through to enjoy. It's big—maybe 16x14ish?—and the photos are fabulous. Suddenly I have several new financially dangerous interests in life.

By Robert Shaw, this is a highly recommended book—and if you do not trust me, you know you can trust Katie. ;) No one is paying me to say this—I brought it home from a downpour-day meander through an antiques mall in North Carolina a year or so ago (well, based on the date, two or so years ago—vintage Katie day, y'all) and am *so* glad I stumbled across it. Again, if you like history (which seems to be a lot of you) or genuinely handmade things, you're probably going to enjoy this one.

And again, Katie loves the book, too. You cannot go wrong. ;)

Near the passage I’ve photographed, Diane Ackerman tells us how, down through the centuries, a woman’s face, as viewed by men, has been her fortune. Men, too, are judged by women: being handsome is important; “but for a man the real commodity is height.”

Ackerman is no prude. She is a sensualist. She is also rational and curious, and she seeks to understand why we react the way we do in our world, specifically by writing chapters on the five senses. “Vision” is the sense she saves for last: “…our eyes are still the great monopolists of our senses.” Like me, like all of us, Ackerman loves to look.

On page 275 Ackerman relates how two films by Omar Sharif left her thinking him “astoundingly handsome.” By the top of page 276, her readers learn that Sharif lost his appeal—yes, even his physical look fell apart for her—when she learned that his spare time was spent mostly “playing bridge.” That’s where you come in on page 276.

Her list is something one can work on; if you’re turning into a hapless lump because you’ll never be one of the Hadid sisters, you can turn to this list. Don’t young women in America have parents who tell them these things? I’m so tired of all the generic whining, someone who just must preach at me all about the…what?!...evils of the male gaze, the crime of lookism? I dismiss all that with derisive laughter. The world will always be drawn to what it finds beautiful. A beautiful woman has been admired and desired throughout history. Sure, what’s beautiful will change in different times and places, but not the desire for beauty. If my admitting to having a desire to seek out beauty, which, by the way, is a desire that extends to many non-figurative scenes in the world and works of art, if that desire makes you angry or makes you think I’m holding women back, then you’re a joke to me, in fact, you’re a liar pushing an agenda that you know will profit you individually, not women in general.

A woman might choose to have breast enhancement if she wants a curvier body; but those breasts won’t look natural from every angle. She might choose to have her face cut; but often those surgeries make the woman look worse than she did before. There is no surgery to make a man taller.

These are the cards you were dealt. Period. You can sit and complain, or you can march around angry about your situation for the rest of your life; but the facts remain: we all have the cards we were dealt. Shall adolescent girls just commit suicide because they don’t see themselves developing into the current “it girl.” No. They should move on. There is a life to be had. And getting your fingernails done every week won’t touch this more interesting life that’s within your grasp. Mothers, fathers, tell your daughters this. Teach them. While you’re at it, teach your sons that their biceps or their six-packs will not be their future. Somehow this country manages to raise a generation of young men who cannot understand power and grit and strength and even swagger unless they think of their bodies. There’s no intellectual power or spiritual (non-religious, you understand) power? These “boys” will never grow up. No one showed them “more.” They’ll be fooled by arrogant jackasses into thinking that a certain candidate, for example, is “the boss” because he, in all his ignorance, doesn’t understand when he’s just being a show-off or an asshole. Tell them that’s not being a man. Say it, Dad. Teach your son.

Ackerman has provided a list, and we can all do something about making ourselves more interesting, that is, more attractive, by applying ourselves in the areas she has defined. That list starts with “zest” and ends with “grace.” “Wit,” for example, is not the same thing as “a sense of humor,” though that word and that phrase do overlap. I mention this comparison because the phrase “sense of humor” seems to have topped the lists I’ve seen in general interest magazines over decades as the number one most prized quality that women seek in men. And if you don’t understand the link between “sense of humor” and “intelligence,” another word on Ackerman’s list, you may be pretty dumb, not a “pretty girl,” but a “pretty dumb girl.”

How many female internet sensations have I started “following” on Instagram who have, over time, bored the hell out of me to the degree that I just “unfollowed” them? (By the way, “following” is the word used on Instagram for those few who don’t know; I wasn’t “stalking” them in real life: I was looking at pictures they’d invited the world to see for free.) Sure, at the beginning, following her was all about her face, hair, and figure. However, seeing picture after picture of you in your latest sexy “fit” toasting your girlfriends at a posh dinner spot is so boring. But where, picture-perfect young woman, is a picture of you standing in front of one of your favorite paintings in an art museum? Where’s a picture of a book for literate adults that knocked you out…and, as you can see from the words “literate adults,” I don’t mean a book aimed at adolescents. If you’re going to heave heavy breasts at us in your teeny bikini, it’s not asking a lot to see also that your mind has carried the load—or, OK, is beginning to carry the load—of reading that includes such distinguished authors as Thoreau or Dickinson or (oh, terror of all terrors!) Hemingway. Are you interested in history or philosophy or politics? (And, no I don’t mean you reblogged a clip about the Middle East conflict because it seemed to be a popular reblog when you’ve done no reading that counts concerning the Middle East.) I have no idea if you’re interested in photography, because all your posts of yourself are merely selfies. You, beautiful as you are physically, never work with a professional photographer? I know Kim Kardashian has a book of selfies. I enjoyed flipping through it in a bookstore. But she’s also posed for photographers, and we have those photos to enjoy as well as selfies.

If you’re a female in the 8th grade and you’ve just seen a photograph (probably Photoshopped) on the internet of a “flawless” girl your age or a little older and you feel despair because you think you’ll never look anything like that, climb out of the rut so many dumb people in our culture are stuck in. You don’t have to be as dumb as they are. And you don’t have to waste your life stomping around in army boots sneering at males; that’s not your only other option: do that and your life will probably be bitterness and bile. Move on.

Years ago, when I was teaching a university class on film (you know, that art form where we are all invited to look as well as listen), I had a female student who was upset to tears at the end of a film we watched together. She raised a question just before our break that came from her frustration and anger and confusion concerning the film. After the 10-minute break midway through our three-hour class, we returned, and I posed again for the class the question she had raised. A young woman sitting behind the young woman who had made her complaint raised her hand. I called on her to speak her mind and this student whom I did not know began what was an extremely impressive, extended response. The student wasn’t showing off, wasn’t saying, “Look at me!” The student wasn’t straining to make cultural references that might make us think she was “smart”; she was influenced by no literary theory and spoke in no fashionable jargon; no, she spoke clear language and in a very mature manner concerning the nature and value of art and then this film in particular. I was watching her and listening and thinking to myself, “Say it, Sister!” while she made a defense of the film and other works of art that challenge us, etc. I wish what I saw and heard from her on that day was something I had on digital file so I could play it for every wimpy snowflake who needs a trigger warning before every word or image.

At the end of class, two male students came to me shaking their heads. “Who is that girl?” “What’s her name?” And one said, “And what’s her phone number?” He then laughed because he knew it wasn’t a serious question: he knew I’d never give it to him. They had been stunned by the maturity of her response. These two seniors were taken aback when I told them she was a freshman, a detail I hoped would light yet another fire under them to bring their best to our class. They had found her admirable. Neither one said anything about her hair, her face, or her figure. They were attracted to her mind, her character, her sensibility. The last letter I had from her after her graduation encouraged me to tell my classes that she was finding law school easy, and anyone who wanted to go to law school should be working in their undergrad English classes right now.

I should report also my respect for the student who had been reduced to tears by a great American film from the 1970s. She came back into the classroom after the two seniors were gone and I was packing up to leave. She had listened to her fellow student. She had more questions for me. The two of us talked there in the classroom for three hours. In fact, she had a paper due for me the next day on the film we had just seen and discussed. That powerful paper she wrote was an example of the movement a student could make toward maturity in only one day. I was knocked out by the long journey she took in such a short amount of time. I could tell she hadn’t come from a background that encouraged viewing and discussing such films as Ingmar Bergman’s WINTER LIGHT and Martin Scorsese’s TAXI DRIVER, but she would also see those films with the class and me that term; she was, I knew, going to need that discussion we had. I trust that experience helped her grow in several ways so that today, some twenty years later or so, she’s one of the people standing in the way of book censors and film censors and thought censors.

I don’t remember what any of these four students looked like. I do remember all four for some comments they made in class and after class.

If you’re a young female who finds herself depressed by all the “beautiful babes” on the internet (perhaps some of the gorgeous women I have photographed and posted on my own sites…no apologies), depressed by “babes” who seem to be living the “best” lives, these females aren’t your enemy. The males who find them physically attractive aren’t your enemy either. Take heart. Your future is not set in stone based on your looks. We all have the cards we were dealt. Work on your sensibility.

P.S. Where’s a good place to start? Diane Ackerman’s A NATURAL HISTORY OF THE SENSES.

Starting my day by reading the newspaper, having breakfast, and checking out the ODC of the day on my favorite very old sofa.

Did you know that the "sopha" wasn't introduced until about 1750 by Chippendale. According to Bill Bryson's book "At Home", "Sofas were 'daring, even titillating, because they resembled beds and so hinted at salacious repose." I'm loving his book and it's very rare for me to read anything but fiction. Just sayin'.

ODC: My Favorite

I guess the books on all the effects of relationships are found around the corner.

Werewolf Boyfriends! Crispin (black) and Eden (grey) from The Chronicles of Crispin Lipton! Werewolves of Bristol Manor and Wrath of the Wendigo are available online! ART BY HELLREDSKY!

Crispin, 15, starts off as a homeless orphan living in a car. He’s half Korean and bisexual, and is always getting bullied. He loves bands like ADTR and struggles with controlling his anger. Crispin loves to write but finds it difficult to write anything more than a few pages. He has heterochromia and ADHD.

Eden, 16, was a foster kid until he ran away at the age of 10. He loves to paint and is always getting it all over his clothes. He refuses to wear anything that isn’t black and is a very friendly though slightly uptight kid. Eden is gay, loves bands like Famous Last Words, and has a deep dark secret. He is left handed.

They start out slow as friends and I think their relationship is cute because of it. They have goofy nicknames for each other and are supportive, but not afraid to call each other out on things, which I love.

drafted and handed to me from a friend of mine - back in the mid 1990s - the handwriting is distinct - clearly, the penmanship of a choate/vassar alum. ; )

i've read several of the books, and the list of film suggestions is precious.

i've kept the list (stashed away in a pile of papers found in a box) as a reminder, both of the gesture (the person felt compelled to augment my education with this new curriculum) but also of the wonderful works on the list itself. borges, john kennedy o'toole, nabokov have all had dominant roles in my late night reading life since then, and withnail and i, obscured in this image, has become one of my most cherished film experiences.

rilke was already on the radar, burroughs had already been consumed... i own a copy of several works by pynchon but have not yet afforded myself the time or indulgence to really delve into his world - and jerzy kozinksi leaves behind the memory of a brilliant and sad satirist.

beneath the list is a set drawing from a commercial that i did back in 1995 in los angeles.

i'll keep these items - and one day they might make it into a scrapbook. for now, they go back into a box which goes into a storage space in a basement in copenhagen - and will likely be unearthed in a few year's time.
