WAH visiting Book Nerds

I borrowed this coffee table book with the intention of visiting all the places around Albuqurque mentioned in It.

It never happened but I'll keep hold of the book just incase those intentions return.

Impossible to make a photograph of the structure without 10 people crowding for a selfie. So I made them ghosts in a heaven for booknerds.

The best way to celebrate 40 years of wearing glasses and having probably -8 (if not worse) vision is to make it part of a booklook outfit!

living on my bookshelf

My Iron-On fashion creation. My mom is not a fan of this photo. She says I look very tired. Some weeks are crazy, and it can’t be helped. And I was tired and hungry, and probably I could spend that day happily with my feet up… but… I was much happier being there than I would have been if I had not been. ♥️

A new place for old cameras.

Tucked into a deep leather armchair between floor-to-ceiling bookshelves and trailing ivy, a brass lantern glowing warm beside stacked tomes, she sits with legs tucked, entirely absorbed in her book, polka dot halter and black mini keeping things casual while gold-buckle strappy heels quietly insist she dressed up for the literature.

I needed a break from digital photography, so I'm posting some film shots I took last year shortly before Easter. I'm so excited that spring has finally arrived!

We tend to celebrate light in our pictures. Understanding how light interacts with the camera is paramount to the work we do. The temperature, intensity and source of light can wield different photography effect on the same subject or scene; add ISO, aperture and speed, the camera, the lens type, focal length and filters…the combination is varied ad multi-layered and if you know how to use them all, you will come to appreciate that all lights are useful, even those surrounded by a lot of darkness.

We are guided by three passions, simple but overwhelmingly strong, our longing to capture in print, that which is beautiful, the constant search for the one picture, and constant barrage of new equipment and style of photography. These passions, like great winds, have blown us across the globe in search of the one and we do understand the one we do look for might be this picture right here for someone else out there.

In 2017, I started to keep the books I was reading instead of giving them away soon after finishing them. This way I had a nice visual "reading list" that I would photograph at the end of the year. I liked this way of keeping track of my reading so much that I continued with it for 2018 and now also for 2019.

However, this year I purchased an e-reader after realizing that reading a real paper copy was nearly impossible while feeding and holding a newborn. Also, the only time for reading would be at nighttime and in the dark, so as not to wake the baby. So here I was, after a decade of contemplating to get an e-reader and always rejecting the idea. My plan to keep going with this new tradition of mine to take a picture of my stack of books at the end of the year crumbled. But -- I didn't want to accept this and so I came up with this solution of stacking random books backwards to represent the e-books.

From bottom to top:

Dr. Maggie Blott: Alles über meine Schwangerschaft -- Tag für Tag

Judy Reeves: A Writer's Books of Days

Stephanie Perkins (Ed.): My True Love Gave to Me

Brigid Lowry: Vanilla Dreams (re-read)

Brigid Lowry: Follow the Blue (re-read)

Brigid Lowry: Freeway -- auf und davon (re-read)

Melvin Burgess: Junk (re-read)

Margarete Stokowski: Die letzten Tage des Patriarchats

Robert Galbraith: Der Ruf des Kuckucks

Francesca Lia Block: The Thorn Necklace

Anne Lux: Tausche Alltag gegen Insel

Anne Lux: Tausche Alltag gegen Glück

Celeste Barber: Challenge Accepted

Annie Darling: Der kleine Laden in Bloomsbury

Karin Lindberg: Sommer auf Schottisch

Stephanie Perkins: Jemand ist in deinem Haus

Joanne Fluke: Strawberry Shortcake Murder

Patti Smith: Devotion

Cassandra Parkin: New World Fairy Tales

Glennon Doyle Melton: Carry on, Warrior

Glennon Doyle Melton: Love Warrior

Libba Bray: A Great and Terrible Beauty

Torre DeRoche: The Worrier's Guide to the End of the World

Stephanie Perkins (Ed.): Summer Days and Summer Nights

Joyce Carol Oates: Bad Girls (re-read)

Cassandra Parkin: The Winter's Child

Anne Lux: Mitten im Sommer, mitten ins Herz

Patti Smith: Year of the Monkey

Livianos & Lütje: Der liebste Papa der Welt

Sam McBratney: Weißt du eigentlich, wie lieb ich dich hab?

Grimm & Wessel: Leise leise, sagt die Meise

That's 31 books in 2019. As per usual, I read a lot young adult books (9).

What's different is that I read more non-fiction than in the years before (10) and I quite enjoyed these books. Also good were the short story collections. They took me months to finish, but it was nice to have smaller bits of reading in between and feeling accomplished for finishing something at all.

I already have a stack of unread books waiting to be read this year.

Happy reading to all of you too!

A Year in Books: 2017

A Year in Books: 2018

A Year in Books: 2019

Another year, another stack of books. In 2020, I managed to finish 30+ books. The stack only holds (most of) the paper copies and is a bit smaller than usual as a result. Missing titles were either e-books or copies from the library; and I didn't count the numerous children's/picture books for infants and toddlers into this.

1. Nina LaCour: Hold Still

2. Shirley Jackson: We Have Always Lived in the Castle (I absolutely loved this one!!!)

3. Alicia Cook: Stuff I've Been Feeling Lately

4. Cristina de Stefano: Skandalös. Das Leben freier Frauen

5. Cassandra Parkin: Lily's House

6. James N. Frey: How to Write a Damn Good Novel

7. Cassandra Parkin: The Beach Hut

8. Miriam Covi: Träume in Meeresgrün

9. Martha Brooks: True Confessions of a Heartless Girl (re-read)

10. Ali Wong: Dear Girls

11. Belinda Benna: Every Step I Take

12. Belinda Luscombe: Heiraten ist gar nicht schwer

13. Rosie Walsh: Ohne ein einziges Wort

14. Lars Hannig: Die phantastischen Fälle des Robert Fuchs

15. Lindsey Kelk: I heart Paris

16. Barbara Cantini: Mortina und das große Verschwinden

17. Nadine D'Arachart & Sarah Wedler: Linie 14 letzte Reihe ich

18. Cassandra Parkin: Underwater Breathing

19. Brian K. Vaughan: Paper Girls 1

20. Brian K. Vaughan: Paper Girls 2

21. Lukas Jüliger / Edgar Allen Poe: Berenice

22. Tiphaine Rivière: Studierst du noch oder lebst du schon?

23. Melanie Raabe: Die Falle

24. Thomas Cadène: Mathilde (6 aus 49 #1)

25. Anne Lux: Glück ist wie das Meer

26. Piper Rayne: Lessons from a One-Night-Stand

27. Cassandra Parkin: The Slaughter Man

28. Nikola Hotel: It Was Always You

29. Nikola Hotel: It Was Always Love

30. Mila Marten: Moments Like Snowflakes

31. Stephanie Perkins (Ed.): My True Love Gave To Me (re-read)

Not a bad year in books, though a bit heavy on romance. I also wanted to find out what the fuzz about New Adult was all about but I wasn't too much into it. Should have stayed with Young Adult books and will keep that in mind for this year.

As always, my choices are quite ecclectic with Young Adult, Romance, Thrillers, Poetry, Mystery/Crime, Memoirs and Graphic Novels & Comics.

My favourites were "Hold Still", "We Have Always Lived in the Castle", "Lily's House", "Dear Girls", and "My True Love Gave to Me".

The most-read author on my list is Cassandra Parkin. She writes amazing novels with brilliant plot twists. If you haven't read her books, I recommend starting with "Lily's House" or "The Winter's Child", my favourites.

What did you read in 2020, and can you recommend some favourites of yours?

I have always loved reading.
