Urnes Stave Church (Norwegian: Urnes stavkirke) is a stave church at the Ornes farm, along the Lustrafjord in the municipality of Luster in Sogn og Fjordane county, Norway.
It has been owned by Fortidsminneforeningen (Society for the Preservation of Norwegian Ancient Monuments) since 1881. In 1979, the Urnes stave church was listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
The church was built around 1130 or shortly thereafter, and still stands in its original location; it is believed to be the oldest of its kind. It provides a link between Christian architecture and the architecture and artforms of the Viking Age with typical animal-ornamentation, the so called "Urnes style" of animal-art. (see picture below)
There have been numerous attempts to interpret the decoration (iconography) of the church's most remarkable part, the old portal in the northern wall. The images are generally considered to represent a snake curling upwards. At the lower end there is an animal with four feet biting the snake.

There are a bout 1000 Cao Dai temples in Vietnam. The one in Tay Ninh is the most wellknown, as there are excursions from Ho Chi Minh city and it is the Holy See of the Cao Dai religion.
The design of the building looks like a church, but this building is unmistakable a Cao Dai temple.

Anjar is a town in the Bekaa Valley in Lebanon. The population is almost entirely Armenian.
The town is famous for the 8th century ruins of the city from the Ummayad dynasty.

For a few years to get to Shaffy's Tuin from where we live, I'd have to make a nasty detour through the station and alongside the railroad tracks. Now that the new building for Booking.com is almost completed the pleasant foot- and cyclebridge to that part of town has been re-opened.
The day was bright as I watched Honeybees on Cornflowers. Here's one that's apparently gathered pollen; see the pollen basket on a leg with that pale stuff. But she's now seeking nectar deeper within flower. Eye gleaming in the clear Sun.

Grote Knip (Playa Kenepa Grandi, also called Playa Abou in Papiamento, translation: "Beach in a valley") is a beach on the Caribbean island of Curaçao, located at the western side of the island, between the villages of Westpunt and Lagun. The beach gives way to a small lagune between high rocks.
Grote Knip is freely accessible to the public. The beach is used as a starting point for snorkeling, due to the presence of a coral reef nearby.

All summer long the Jacobite steam train has hauled seven carriages full of tourists, every day, twice a day, from The Fort (Fort William) to the little fishing port of Mallaig. For so many it is a dream ticket to go on the Jacobite, the Hogwart's Express, over the famous Glenfinnan viaduct at the head of Loch Shiel. And thousands, perhaps well over a hundred thousand drive the Road to the Isles to watch the train go over the viaduct. There is a National Trust car park at the Glenfinnan visitor centre, but there were so many cars, campervans, coaches and tour buses the community built another, larger car park next door. All summer long it has been mobbed and often closed off, full, an hour before the train comes along. For those who get their dream ticket on the train there is next to no Harry Potter experience, The trackside is so overgrown with trees that you can rarely see a view through the carriage window. Greatest train journey in the world? Not in my book yet I can't deny it does wonders for the tourist industry in the area I live in. Passengers can get off in Mallaig and have fish or haggis and chips....or deep fried pizza. And spend some money in Haggard Alley, the Harry Potter shop by the harbour.
The train stops its summer schedule on 28th October. I look forward to seeing how many people turn up to watch the train after that time. Autumn is here, the first snow on top of the mountains last night, and still visitors are coming to the area.
So I wanted an end of season picture to go with my first train of the season from last April. It was a bit wilder then, but what a magnificent landscape with a steam train in it!
PS For any Americans, it is a viaduct, not an aqueduct

Tugboat wreck is one of the best spots on Curacao for diving and snorkeling. The beach where you start is not nice, but this location is famous for the Tugboat wreck, and a good amount of fish and other sea life. The wreck is about 6 meter deep.
They say it is a good location for seeing seahorses, but we didn't see them.

Clervaux is a very small town in Luxemburg.(slightly more than 1000 inhabitants). The city was the site of heavy fighting during World War II, in December 1944 (Battle of Clervaux).
The Family of Man, a famous exhibit of photos collected by Edward Steichen, is on permanent display in Clervaux Castle.

Op de kop van het Oosterdokseiland vindt de ‘grande finale’ plaats: de realisatie van het internationale hoofdkantoor van Booking.com.
Voor Booking.com was de unieke locatie de belangrijkste reden om zich op het Oosterdokseiland te vestigen. De ligging aan het IJ, nabij het centrum en bijna bovenop het Centraal Station, maakte deze plek perfect voor het Amsterdamse IT-bedrijf (stedenbouw.nl).

I often try to describe where I live, and find it hard to adequately do so. I think I have found the answer in "unspoilt". There are few roads, and little infrastructure. Electricity has been threaded through the forests and over the mountains but it is hardly visible. There are four tiny village shops. One petrol pump. That's over an area of approximately 130 square kilometres. There are native humans skulking in the trees. About 2000 of them spread very thinly. So many houses are invisible in the landscape. Mr Bean has one and is a regular visitor. Ardnamurchan is regarded as the most remote west highland peninsula.
This is a beach called "Singing Sands" because of the sound generated by grains of sand moving over each other. It's a fair walk out to this place, but out of shot there were probably a dozen folk playing on the sand or swimming in the sea, down at the southern end. I heard the sand 'singing' as I shuffled my weary legs back towards the forest. Apparently it is something to do with the shape of the grains of the sand and moisture....but anyhow it didn't seem like a very musical song they were singing to me! In the foreground of the shot are some of the patterns I look for, for my sand art pictures. You can see where the black grains come down off the volcanic rocks and flow in little streams down over the white sand. It's not so easy to find a picture in the patterns!

Cleveland, Ohio, USA, on a stormy and windy evening, one minute it was clear, the next minute early season snow showers, thankfully there was a gazebo that offered some shelter from the elements.
Covid story of that day (November 1st): I had booked a room at the Travelodge on booking.com, when I showed up the door was locked and there was a taped sign saying the hotel wasn't accepting guests and please go to the Days Inn instead. OK, so I drive to the Days Inn, and the reception is not staffed and the lobby is full of sketchy characters without masks... After 1 full minute I get the hell out of dodge and book a delightful but expensive B&B on my phone.......later I found out that the other hotels were taken over by the local Public Health Authorities as a boarding house for homeless Covid quarantine patients, the hotel was closed since JULY and they were still taking reservations on booking.com!!!! Yikes! I didn't get sick as a result but that was close. Anyway even after all that booking.com is still after me about why I was a no show and that I may be responsible, calling the hotel is of course an exercise in futility, still no resolution yet.

The Völklingen Ironworks (German: Völklinger Hütte) is located in the German town of Völklingen, Saarland. In 1994, it was declared by UNESCO as a World Heritage site.
It is an anchor point of the European Route of Industrial Heritage (ERIH).
In 1873, Julius Buch began planning of a steel works near Völklingen on the banks of the Saar river. However, this planned work was not completed. In 1881, Carl Röchling began new construction. Two years later the first smelter began operation. The plant closed in 1986.
Today, the Völklinger Hütte is a museum. The Ferrodrom is an interactive science center focusing on the making of iron. Visitors can tour the production areas. In addition, temporary exhibits, on a variety of topics are hosted in the large power halls. In the summer, there are occasional concerts held.

After visiting Húsavík and Goðafoss in the north of Iceland, we really wanted to drive south to the amazing Aldeyrafoss, but since it was one of the few days with rain, we decided to skip it and instead try to reach the famous seastack Hvítserkur in the blue hour. We knew that the drive would take more than 3 hours, but if Google Maps is right, we should be able to see Hvítserkur in the last faint light of the day. After 2 and a half hours of driving, we turned right onto a gravel road that got more and more bumpy along the way. Moreover, it started to rain and got increasingly dark, but since the visibility was still pretty good we kept speeding over all those bumps with the allowed 80 km/h, passing only a few lonely houses and farms along the way.
We eventually reached the parking lot, and as we got out of our camper van, we noticed that not much of the car’s white color was visible as it was splattered all over with dirt. Since it was already late and the weather was pretty bad, there was only one other car in the parking lot which was leaving when we arrived. So we hurried to get to the viewpoint on the cliff, and for a moment we really thought about going down to the beach, but due to the sketchy “trail” down and the extremely strong winds we decided to stay up there. We then set up our tripods and I really wasn’t sure if I can take my hands off the tripod without it flying away. My girlfriend and I then held each others tripod while the other mounted the camera on it. We kept the tripod as low to the ground as possible and tried some long exposures, but soon found that the wind was so strong that even shorter exposures of only a few seconds resulted in blurry images. To make things worse, the intensity of the rain increased, but we stayed out there and waited for the brief moments of calm where I could capture the only sharp image of the evening. To make the foreground a little more interesting, I then blended in the water from a blurry exposure of 13 seconds, which was nowhere near enough to smooth out the water.
Battered by the Icelandic winds and slightly soaked by the rain, we returned to the camper van and both hoped that we got a least one sharp image on our SD cards. Finally back in the car and protected from the elements, I looked up the way to the nearest campsite and my girlfriend then told me that she remembers an accommodation right next to the Hvítserkur parking lot. Since we had to drive by there anyway, we stopped and had a look, but the lights in the house were already out and not a single person was to be seen. I then checked booking.com and found this accommodation, but there seemed to be no room available. However, there was a phone number listed and so I asked my girlfriend if I should try calling them. She was a little hesitant since it was already 10:30 pm, but I figured they don’t need to answer the phone or probably already have their phones turned off if they don’t want to be bothered by late requests. So I gave it a try and a super-friendly Icelander picked up the phone and said: “Sure, there is still a room available! Where are you?” We were actually standing right in front of the house and 2 minutes later he came out of the house across the street, greeted us and showed us the rooms. We were so happy that we had found a nearby place to stay and especially enjoyed the luxury of a spacious room (compared to our camper van), took a hot shower and fell asleep very quickly in the comfortable bed.
The next morning, we both somehow hoped for an epic sunrise, but the sky was covered with clouds, the winds were still brutal and rain was pouring down. So it was with a heavy heart that we left this beautiful and remote place to head to the Snæfellsnes peninsula, and despite the far from ideal conditions, I am very happy about this picture because it captures the memories of another great adventure in the land of fire and ice. I hope you like it too!
I wandered up through the forest at Mingarry Park. Old Mary of the Salen Hotel had told me there was a derelict village somewhere up there. It was hard going as I broke out of the trees on to the rock strewn hillside. I watched carefully for adders, fearful for little Effie trying to get over the dried tufts of grass and bracken. I worked my way up to the top where I sat in the sun with a 360 view. Loch Shiel to my front was flat as glass reflecting the surrounding mountains and forest. And way off behind me a deer stood on a peak looking across at me. It was perfectly peaceful up there. Finding my way back to the forest and through it was another battle so I was ready to stop for a break and a chat when I spotted two old folks planting potatoes in their plot by the roadside at Mingarry. I always get two questions asked at such a meeting. "Are you on holiday?" and 'Where are you staying?" I confess I puff my chest out a bit when I say I live there and explain where my house is."Oh the big house" all the locals call it. I have Highlander blood in me so I do feel very at home with people I regard as my type. Acharacle may be a tiny insignificant place but it is full of talented people. so, potato planting 84 year old husband turned out to be a legend. He proudly mentioned he had received an MBE from the Queen. I was surprised but knew it must be for something significant. It turned out he got his MBE for playing the accordion. The man I was talking to was known as the King of Ceilidh. And had released 50 albums in his time. Look him up. Our postman Ian is also a learned man. He covers the village of Strontan too. But do you remember an element on your Chemistry Periodic chart called Strontium? That's where Strontium was discovered and it was used in the manufacture of every old style CRT TV. I tell you these hills are full of talent.

We have two families staying with us tonight. One Dutch, one German, and each had had their national flag raised on our flagpole for their arrival. Something about the German flag didn't seem right when it was first raised with the red band uppermost. Fortunately I realised my error before they arrived and put the flag the other way up. Next up were the Dutch, red or blue uppermost? I googled it and made sure that, opposite to the German flag, red goes uppermost.
But both families had wandered down to the Loch Shiel jetty (the Germans meeting a 12 point stag on the way) and both had told me how fantastically tranquil a spot it is (despite a tiny number of irritating midges), and they love it. Completely understanding why people like me come here. Loch Shiel easily trumps Loch Lomond or Loch Ness and must be one of the most special lochs in Scotland. It has so much history being the scene for Bonnie Prince Charlie and the Jacobite Rebellion and all that, Viking battles and the Quickening scenes from Highlander, the movie. In this the loch views are at Glenfinnan, the swordfights in the ancient Caledonian forest around Ariundle, the running scene on the beaches towards Arisaig...and of course the mountain scenes are in Skye......and the village scenes are just like it is in Acharacle today!
Acharacle truly is a place of surprises. (There really aren't many midges this year)
