Kilden: Since the opening in 2012, the Kilden theater and concert hall in Kristiansand has delighted both residents and visitors with great cultural experiences. Kilden is the largest cultural building erected in Sørlandet, and is home to Kilden Teater, Kristiansand Symphony Orchestra and Kilden Opera. There is also a culture house operation in Kilden with concerts by national and international artists.

The art silo: An award-winning grain silo in Kristiansand, built by some of Norway's most renowned architects, will now be a signal building for Nordic modernist art. Kunstsilo opens in the autumn of 2022.

The silo in Kristiansand, which has long since been emptied of grain and taken out of service, was built by Christiansands Møller in the mid-1930s.

The canal town: Silokaia on Odderøya in Kristiansand is transformed from an industrial quay area into an urban and future-oriented district. Fully developed, Kanalbyen will accommodate about 700 homes.

Like JAC (Jianghuai), Hawtai started as a partner of Hyundai and initially manufactured the Hyundai-branded SUVs Santa Fe and Terracan from 2003, which were also sold under its own name from 2004. Hawtai planned to buy manufacturing rights of the Saab 9-3 from Spyker Cars in 2011, but the deal fell through. Hawtai launched its first indigenous developed car in 2010, the B11 sedan (later renamed Lusheng E90). Later models include the Baolige B35 (based on the old Santa Fe that's trying to look like the first generation Porsche Cayenne), the smaller Hawtai B21 sedan (originally launched in 2010, later renamed Lusheng E70/E80, now Lusheng WS55). The new Shengdafei (the Chinese name for the old Santa Fe) was launched in 2014. It comes with a 1.5T petrol and 2.0 diesel engine.

construction site visit.

future systems have designed a housing block for a small peninsula in the copenhagen south harbour. it is speculative housing for a private client and the project is marketed as luxury flats, the most obvious luxury being the stunning views of the city, the water, and the west coast of sweden.

the house is called a tower but copenhagen has a fear of heights and we are really looking at a solitary housing block. it seems that a primary concern of future systems has been to model the block which is wider than it is high so that it would appear slender and tower-like from certain vantage points, namely arriving at the site (as seen above) and looking towards the house from the city.

so far, so successful. pretty girl in a blue prefab dress. but surprisingly there is no connection between the exterior shape and the interior. in fact, the flats are largely rectilinear and the balconies simply fill the gap to the curvaceous facade.

there are no signs of future systems within. the plans are typical of Danish housing, albeit somewhat compromised by the complex exterior geometry, they halfheartedly conform to. details everywhere are from catalogues; you saw the stairs below. we use those in social housing.

nothing wrong with catalogues, I suppose, modern architecture is a collage of products as opposed to an assemblage of materials. but the fact that the inside is so completely divorced from the outside makes this a building without integrity and not an example to be followed.

deeply sceptical of the current fascination with form, I believe that almost anything worth achieving in architecture can be done with a box, but the "almost" in that claim is important. the sculptural part of future systems' project has real qualities but they don't follow through.

as such, the project proves itself to be part of the noisy, nouveau riche event culture of the property boom - it is pop art without the art.

and as such, it is unlikely to have any followers. the recent collapse of the copenhagen housing market will see to that.

still, standing on the roof, surrounded by water and a 360 degrees view of copenhagen and its suburbs was a thrill, no less.

teglværkshavnen harbour housing, copenhagen, denmark 2003-2008.

the architecture scene in copenhagen is a bloodbath these days, people being fired by the dozens and the first offices bankrupted by the crisis. and all I have to offer are more photos of buildings...bear with me. this, again, is the recently completed habour housing project by vandkunsten, the company I work for.

I put together the following text for john hill's archidose site which also features the professional photos of the project by adam mørk and a few drawings, check it out.

the project consists of 118 flats, half of them social housing and half of them private, and a communal house placed out in the copenhagen harbour.

it is result of a 2003 competition which had an unusual brief, partly in the 50/50 social housing-private ownership mix but not least in the fact that the copenhagen harbour authorities had donated an area of water for the competition as they wanted a model project to boost development of this part of the habour.

the idea was that the money saved from not having to buy land could instead pay for a large landfill that would accommodate buildings and cars. our proposal was to forget the landfill and to build an artificial island in the form of a one-story parking house to get rid of the cars that plague the spaces between our houses and to get closer to the water.

the sea-view has become an obsession in real estate but maybe looking at the sea is the least interesting and certainly the most passive way to enjoy living near water. our claim was that the spaces between our houses and the wooden decks around the parking island would encourage swimming, fishing, kayaking - and the great thing was that when the first residents moved in this spring, we saw people fishing from their balconies, swimming, even partying on a floating platform...

building on the water was a challenge, but once the island was established, the plan helped organize things: the floor of the parking house was dimensioned for a single, large tower crane on tracks and the houses were built one by one as the crane moved from one end of the island to the other.

the buildings are quite narrow and all flats receive daylight from two or three sides. windows span from floor to ceiling and are for the most part placed next to partition walls to reflect the at times limited nordic light into the rooms - and to make the most of the light reflected off the water.

the general structure is prefabricated concrete, but because of the difficult site elements like balconies, stairs and fully fitted bathrooms were also prefabricated and simply lifted into place.

this particular photo is somewhat earlier than the previous ones and people haven't furnished their balconies yet. today, the whole bookshelf-like arrangement against a neutral, black backdrop makes the residents' chairs and washing and plants stand out nicely. so far, you'll have to take my word for it.

Title: The toes can touch the water

"There are big plans for developing Køge, even though the building activity proceed slowly. While we wait for the many new buildings with mixed functions to arise, the spaces between building lots are used temporarily in different ways. Here are playgrounds, fireplaces and a new beach, which of course isn,t temporary. The picture shows a bathing jetty, and people actually use it also in the wintertime. Next to it a new club-house is being constructed for those, who enjoy swimming in the ocean. Here you can take a shower and spend som time in a sauna".

when the inner harbour froze in copenhagen, we had to return to the scene of the crime, so to speak, and see vandkunsten's teglværkshavnen housing from the ice.

people were taking walks across the water and by one of the blocks, a resident had made a hole in the ice for winter bathing. the idea of changing the relationship to the water from a passive one of looking at it to an active one of using it seems to hold true even in deep winter...
