Taxi to Newphe Mainstore:
This is Piercy. He has a sad past. His Mum and Dad left him alone. He leads a nomadic life, lives on leftover food from the garbage cans and has stolen something from a shop. At night he sleeps in a home for homeless bears. He's full of piercings and needs a bath. Can I still save this bear and how will the other bears react if I adopt him.

"To possess the world in the form of images is, precisely, to re-experience the unreality and remoteness of the the real." Susan Sontag, On Photography
Mursi mother adorned with an ornamental clay lip-plate, a wild boar's ivory tusk (Warthog canine tooth), facial chalk markings, and decorated goat-skin clothing - from a small semi-nomadic pastoral settlement situated on the upper bank of the Mago River, a tributary that joins the essential Omo River in a remote corner of southwestern Ethiopia.
On the meaning of lip-plates in Mursi culture and society
The Mursi are one of the last groups in Africa where women still wear large wooden or clay plates in their lower lips. Most Mursi women wear lip-plates as an aesthetic symbol of cultural pride and identity, signifying passage to womanhood/adulthood.
The labrets are more frequently worn by unmarried or newly wed women and are generally worn when serving men food or during important ritual events (weddings, men's duelling competitions, communal dances, safari photo-ops).
Debunking popular myths
Contrary to popular opinion among travellers and other passing strangers, ethnographers found little or no connection between the size of a woman’s lip-plate and the size of her bridewealth (cattle, guns).
Anthropologists and ethnographers have debunked another popular myth. They found no evidence that the labret originated as a deliberate attempt to disfigure and make women less attractive to slave traders, yet this myth seems to surface regularly in accounts by both amateur and professional photographers, Safari tourists, and bloggers alike.
The Mursi and Mursiland
Most Mursi live in small settlements dispersed across Mursiland, a remote territory of about thirty by eighty kilometres between the Omo and Mago Rivers in southwestern Ethiopia, a day or two overland to the borders with South Sudan and northern Kenya.
The terrain varies from a volcanic plain dominated by a range of hills and a major watershed to a riverine forest, wooded grasslands and thorny bushland thickets. The climate is harsh and unstable with low rainfall and daily temperatures regularly exceeding 40°C in the shade during the dry season.
The Mursi are semi-nomadic farmers and herders who depend on shifting hoe-cultivation (mostly drought-resistant varieties of sorghum) and cattle herding for their livelihood. They number less than ten thousand today.

PADDY: "Hullo Scout. What are you doing with our special pins we wear on our scarves?"
SCOUT: "Well, you know Peter, mijn beste vriend?"
PADDY: "Of course I do, Scout. We all know Peter."
SCOUT: "Well, Peter borrowed a piercing from Piercy to wear in his muzzle."
PADDY: "What?" *Alarmed.*
SCOUT: "Oh, its alright, Paddy. It is not actually in mijn beste vriend Peter's muzzle but around it."
PADDY: "Oh that's a relief! I don't like piercings, and I certainly don't think they suit little bears like Peter!" *Shakes head.*
SCOUT: "Then you don't think I should convert any of these pretty pins into piercings for my muzzle?" *Hopeful.*
PADDY: "Certainly not, Scout! Piercings would no more suit you than they would Peter!" *Shakes head vehmently.*
SCOUT: "That's a pity." *Disappointed.* "I thought I would have looked quite fetching with a crown through my muzzle."
PADDY: "Oh please don't do that, Scout. You look beautiful enough as you are. You don't need any piercings, and nor for that matter does Peter."
SCOUT: "Oh, do you really think so, Paddy?" *Preens.*
PADDY: "I do, Scout! So please, please, PLEASE, don't pierce yourself with any pins, no matter now pretty they are."
SCOUT: "Oh, alright Paddy. If you don't think I shouldn't, I won't." *Ponders.* "Although I do feel you have questionable taste, being so ancient as you are, Paddy."
PADDY: "Scout!"
SCOUT: "What?!?!"
PADDY: "What have I told you about commenting on my age, Scout?"
SCOUT: "But it's true, Paddy! You are so ancient, like Daddy is. You both remember when the world was black and white."
PADDY: "It wasn't the world that was black and white, just the telly!"
SCOUT: "Well in that case the world must have been black and white, because everybear knows that the world is shown on the telly!" *Nods emphatically.*
PADDY: "Scout I... it's... oh, never mind, Scout."
My bears Paddy and Scout have made very good friends with two bears in Holland called Peter and Oleg (www.flickr.com/photos/40262251@N03/galleries/721577154558...) and their Mummy (www.flickr.com/photos/66094586@N06/) . Peter and Scout are very similar and have become best friends. Mummy marian recently adopted Piercy (www.flickr.com/photos/40262251@N03/galleries/721577218744...) who is a bear who has led a sad life and has a lot of piercings. Peter likes Piercy's piercings because he thinks they are cool and edgy, so he asked to borrow one of Piercy's, which he put around - not through - his muzzle. You can see that here www.flickr.com/photos/66094586@N06/53019958101/in/datepos... or in the first comment below. Now Scout was contemplating the same thing. Thankfully, despite Scout thinking Paddy has questionable taste, I'm glad he listened to Paddy's advice. I don't think Scout should have a piercing. Do you?
My Paddington Bear came to live with me in London when I was two years old (many, many years ago). He was hand made by my Great Aunt and he has a chocolate coloured felt hat, the brim of which had to be pinned up by a safety pin to stop it getting in his eyes. The collar of his mackintosh is made of the same felt. He wears wellington boots made from the same red leather used to make the toggles on his mackintosh.
He has travelled with me across the world and he and I have had many adventures together over the years. He is a very precious member of my small family.
Scout was a gift to Paddy from my friend. He is a Fair Trade Bear hand knitted in Africa. His name comes from the shop my friend found him in: Scout House. He tells me that life was very different where he came from, and Paddy is helping introduce him to many new experiences. Scout catches on quickly, and has proven to be a cheeky, but very lovable member of our closely knit family.

Young Mursi mother with ornamental clay lip-plate. Semi-nomadic pastoral settlement situated on the upper bank of the Mago River, a tributary that joins the essential Omo River in a remote corner of southwestern Ethiopia.

The Mursi are one of the last groups in Africa where women still wear large wooden or clay plates in their lower lips. Most Mursi women wear lip-plates as an aesthetic symbol of cultural pride and identity, signifying passage to womanhood/adulthood.
The labrets are worn more frequently by unmarried or newly wed women and are generally worn when serving men food or during important ritual events (weddings, men's duelling competitions, communal dances, safari photo-ops).
Cow-horn designs are engraved along the borders of this labret, signifying Mursi dependance on cattle herding for their livelihood.

Contrary to popular opinion among travellers and other passing strangers, ethnographers found little or no connection between the size of a woman’s lip-plate and the size of her bridewealth (cattle, guns).

I was very brave with stranger 95. I was walking through the Brighton Laines and as I walked passed a clothes shop in Sydney Street I glanced in and saw a very pretty, albeit unusual girl. So I actually went in and explained my strangers project to her and asked if she'd be part of it. She happily agreed and even moved to sit on the blue lit steps which I knew would enhance the portrait. Meet Ellie:
Ellie has been the manager of Cyberdog for over 4 years. It's a shop which sells cyber clothing, futuristic fashion, club wear and rave t-shirts. It's a job which she loves because she gets to talk with different people on a daily basis, rather like Barry stranger 94. Plus she is allowed to express herself through her own unique appearance and dress style, something very important to Ellie.
I asked how she got into body piercings, tattoos and her style and she explained that she did an apprenticeship in body piercing and worked in that field for 10 years before coming to Cyberdog.
Lastly I asked where Ellie was from and she proudly said that she was born and bred in Brighton as were both her parents.
Thank you for taking part Ellie. I love your style. Let me know if you want any copies of your portraits. I have a few different ones which I'm sure you'll like.
