International training for the opening event of the 2022/23 IBSF North American Cup skeleton races at the Whistler Sliding Center on Blackcomb Mountain, BC. Around 100 bobsleigh and skeleton athletes from over 20 nations competed.

The Sliding Centre was home to the 2010 Winter Olympic bobsleigh, luge and skeleton events - touted as the fastest track on the international race circuit with skeleton sleds reaching up to 146 kilometres an hour down 1,700 metres of curated ice. It’s all over in less than a minute.

When Sarajevo was awarded the 1984 Winter Olympics in 1977, a bobsleigh and luge track was proposed. The track design was approved in 1981, with construction starting on 1 June of that year. Construction was completed on 30 September 1982 at a cost YUD 563,209,000. The first international competition of merit held at the track was the 1983 European Bobsleigh Championships in January of that year. The 1984 games had 20,000 luge spectators and 30,000 bobsleigh spectators. After the Winter Olympics, the track was used for World Cup competitions until the start of the Yugoslav wars in 1991 that would include the Bosnian War the following year. The track was damaged as a result of Siege of Sarajevo. During the siege, the track was used as an artillery position by Bosnian Serb forces. As of January, 2018 the tracks still remain mostly intact with war wounds of defensive fighting holes, drilled into one of the last turns of the course. The tracks have been used for graffiti and bicycling in the period between the end of the war and the commencement of renovations in 2014. In June 2014 restoration began on the track, including removal of overgrowth, and graffiti and the application of a protective coating from Start 1 down to the bottom. The track is currently used for summer luge training, and other summer activities.

Dramatic clouds with a sunburst after a long rain, Sigulda, Latvia, at the Bobsleigh:

First Bobsleigh was there already at the end of the 19th century, while this one was built with the support of a (then) yugoslavian company from Sarajevo from 1984-1986.

Team USA practice their starts in the "ice house" at Canada Olympic Park in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

When it was first constructed, the ice house was a unique training facility for bobsleigh and luge. It allows individuals and teams to practice their starts without having to completely run an entire course and then truck their gear back to the top of the hill. Since fast starting times are critical for a good time, this made ice time at the venue very valuable. Constructed just a little too short, a four-man bobsleigh team can actually bump the end wall.

Today I had the opportunity to see the 4-man bobsled World Cup race held in St. Moritz (Switzerland). A beautiful competition that took place on the oldest bobsleigh track in the world, as well as the only track still made with natural ice (every year it is rebuilt with pressed snow and then iced)! With this shot I want to congratulate the winning team, the Lochner team

from Germany!
